I've always run my own campaigns and over the past year have tried to run a few adventures. The first failed; the second is going well; the third will be Madness. I think it takes some time to learn how to run modules. I think, however, that I will try to run them in the future when possible...
Love these short, quick 5e updates. I hope they continue as they are an easy way to find the new info trickling out all in one location (I imagine they also are/will be good in getting people to your home page instead of straight to the forums).
I enjoy the podcast links you've included, also...
I think your cow-drop is a fine first day. It seems pretty full. I'd really almost-force at least one PC into the first floor holes and have them fight some swarmy insects. Kids hate insects. Which means they'll love it. And the other players will have to rescue their partners and they'll...
Good advice. I'd also recommend you show any map of a small area - if you might use Reavers of Harkenwold, use Harkenwold map so they feel they are a part of some "place', but then pull out your village map with the barn and go from there. You very well might find players want to keep the...
I understand your point but disagree. There is no one lethality of D&D. The DM chooses how hard to make each battle and uses tools provided to make it "correct'y" difficult. But even then, many options and suggestions are given as to how lethal to make it.
My games are not too lethal, but if...
Completely disagree with the OP. This is the type of rule that shouldn't be a hard rule either way. And I say this as someone who has NEVER used raise dead in my games - but it doesn't hurt my game to have it be an option in other games. I think D&D 5e will be the type of game that has less...
Is this going to be an every Saturday game, 4 hours each week? Have you decided to make it more episodic until at least you know if/how many kids will be consistent shows? This is probably a good idea, although tougher to run. One of the problems you'll have is that if it isn't exactly a...
you know, I have never thought of this, sadly. Of course, depending on the dungeon there might be lots of graffiti - and could add story hooks or other interesting immersion. I will certainly use in my next dungeon.
Awesome. That sounds like a fun group / story / DM ... I wish I were playing! You have a PC party consisting of goblins, bringing a group of 100 goblins into Sharn to set up a new colony? How frickin' fun would that be? Talk about potential epic bar fights....
It's hard to prepare since you don't know the kids' experience level, but it is safe to assume that at least some kids will have little/no experience. With that in mind:
I think D&D Essentials is a great route. They are slightly easier / more simply than standard 4e. The kids won't think...
I have an addiction and laready want to give them more of my money.
It will be fun to see how this develops over time.
Too bad Enworld's countdown clock was set too late....
good replies. It's been said but I want to emphasize:
The need a "home base" and you need to give them a reason to make them comfortable there. If they have a home base, they will start to feel connections to the city and get grounded, allowing them to venture into other areas of the city...
*LAST* Question: when you first talked about whether PC's achieved their goals, I understand it as there would be a related consequence in Madness. With what you say here, it seems that the consequence in actually in Siege. Is this accurate? I will try to make the consequence relate to...
Rechan ~ I love this thread and hope others will try to do what you're doing - even if it's with one's nephews and friends. Kids love this game and especially if they're new to it, they'll have no idea how poor of a DM you are - they will think you're awesome. I'll answer all your questions in...
Good for you. I use D&D as a tool in my ESL games in Korea and have played with many dozens of kids over the past couple years. It's fun. When you have new kids playing, you'll get the un-jaded, first-time reactions of AWESOME that will remind you of when you played as a child. FANTASTIC...
Thanks Steve (the DM declares you can not gain more XP)
Very helpful details. Clarifying question: this goal as you stated, did you explain his backstory and explicitly explain that this was his in-game goal? Or did you leave personal goals a little ambiguous to the players' interpretation of...
In the Siege adventure, how did the characters "win"? The goal was to push back the siege but we know how that eventually ends. Were there goals beyond various encounters to stop the siege?
