D&D 5E How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

Zhuge Liang was pretty charismatic as well, but he was not a fighter. He didn't carry weapons, probably wore no armor, never killed anyone (except by talking them to death, which he didn't do in real life)... he was like a Noble NPC class. I'm going to have to disagree with this. Charisma was...

D&D 5E How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

I base some of my medieval "generals" on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, based on China c. 180 AD to around 200 AD. There were many generals during this civil war, but I think you could break them into three groups: 1) The scholars. Ur-Example Zhuge Liang. He probably wasn't even proficient with...

D&D 5E How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

I think very few soldiers become generals. That takes a high degree of smarts and other traits. I use point buy every time I game, whether I play or GM, because I want the various PCs to be balanced with each other. (And throwing NPCs with very high stats isn't fair, if they're using PC-like...

D&D General Payn's Ponderings: The Fighter's identity; or, what's left after the combat pillar?

I like the idea of giving fighters non-combat abilities, but I didn't like followers much, and not just because they were a pain (and weak enough that sending them to scout could just get them killed). It changed the direction of the class, and not always in a way the player wanted. For...

D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

D&D doesn't have the narrative tools a system like Fate or Mutants & Masterminds has, so I would not nerf the PC. They may get a new patron, get a plot hook (attacked by NPCs, which would involve the entire party and could be a good plot hook) or nothing could happen. The first two are not...

D&D 5E Rebooting d20 Modern With Everyday Heroes

It was a very controversial system. I hope they will change it. Fortunately it can be eliminated and replaced with something else.

D&D 5E Math Question: Removing PB and its effect on saves?

The mage would have to be more selective in what save they target. I had a high level fighter (I think 13th or 14th level) who would laugh off Fortitude (well, Constitution) saves against that DC (not entirely laugh off, since he wouldn't enjoy his proficiency bonus to Con saves but would have...

    D&D 5E Climbing walls etc?

Yes. It's been that way since 3rd Edition. If the wizard is trained in those skills, and has the same proficiency/rank/level, etc, then yes. (Survival is Wisdom-based in 3e, and Nature is Wisdom-based in 4e. I guess they made it Int-based in 5e.)

D&D General What rule do you hate most from any edition? (+ Thread)

3.0 psionics based on physical ability scores. I'll just metamorphose into something scary and now nothing can stop my Disintegrate power. On the other side of the power scale, needing one ability score per discipline (other classes didn't have that problem). Psionic combat was also badly...

D&D 5E Split the Assassin from the Rogue back into its own class

I voted "No, the Assassin should stay where it is". Assasssins use most rogue skills. Stealth is obvious, but also lockpicking (targets could hide behind closed doors), perception (because doors, guards and traps might be hidden), disguise ("I'm just a servant"), climbing (getting into places...

    D&D 5E Limiting Cantrips?

I see this as more chances to defile. I'm not a big fan of these types of restrictions in-game but I could see restricted cantrips if you preserve and unrestricted cantrips if you're willing to defile. If your preserver has run out of cantrips and needs more spells, you are suddenly faced with...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Mass Effect mentioned species religions. Among humans, apparently atheism is common, and Ashley William's Christianity is considered "odd" by the time the game takes place. (Note that Shepard can respond by saying they're Christian, they're atheist and okay with her religion, or respond like a...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Not IMO, but imagine if the king or queen must be crowned by a high-ranking cleric of the national religion. This is a problem if the king or queen doesn't worship that god, has the opposite alignment, etc. If King Bob marries Queen Alice from another kingdom for political reasons, and they have...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

I've looked into non-Christian religions just to have an idea of how other religions operate for flavor purposes. Many religions do not have "regular" services, with temples only being used for holy days, weddings, funerals, etc. Some religions require worshippers to maintain the graves of their...

D&D General Are NPCs like PCs?

They shouldn't be the same. An NPC might only need to be "on stage" for one scene.

D&D 5E What Do You Think Is Essential in a Bare-Bones Character Sheet?

I answered for a paper sheet. An electronic sheet requires more "slots". (I can just write stuff like how many death saves I've failed on a paper sheet, and that isn't needed most of the time, but an electronic sheet has to have that.)

    D&D 5E Psionics in a sci-fi D&D

I think those telekinetic examples (except Wall of Force) are far too specific. I wouldn't expect psychics to have powers equivalent to this, either. I'm expecting new powers, but built to be balanced under D&D rules.
