    The Blackgate Chronicles (Updated 11/15/21)

For you DMs who play on a VTT, I'll be sharing the battlemaps I've created for game after I've used them over on Twitter (@Hjorimir). I dropped the first one this morning, which you can find at the link below. I won't normally be posting here when I do. So, if you're interested in the free...

    The Blackgate Chronicles (Updated 11/15/21)

The Blackgate Chronicles Session 1, Part 2 – The Offering Fireday, 6th Gozran, 817 Halloran poked at the fire with a stick, sending a small spattering of embers into the chill, morning air. A light rain had begun during the early hours of the morning and the sky overhead looked like it wouldn’t...

Thank you, Azkorra. I admit, it took me quite a while, but my players love how it turned out.

    The Blackgate Chronicles (Updated 11/15/21)

The Blackgate Chronicles Session 1, Part 1 – Under the Knife Oathday, 5th Gozran, 817 Rhynn struggled with the red-shrouded men as they bound each of her wrists in heavy rope. Is this it? Is this how it ends for me? I had only just started this life of mine! As the wizard was being bound, a...

    The Blackgate Chronicles (Updated 11/15/21)

Dramatis Personae When the campaign starts the characters are 2nd level, which means that other than the cleric and wizard, we don’t have subclasses yet. It will be interesting to see their choices at 3rd. Antoine Lemarc, Le Dague des Corbeaux (aka The Magpie) human rogue 2 (criminal – thief)...

    The Blackgate Chronicles (Updated 11/15/21)

Introduction Hi, my name is Clay and I go by the handle of Hjorimir (YOR-ih-meer) on the interwebs (@Hjorimir on the Twitters where I post often if you care to follow along). I started playing D&D at the wee age of 8 when I cried long and loud to my dad, so he’d force my brother to let me play...

Warhammer's Age of Sigmar: Soulbound Is Here!

I kind of want to buy this (because it looks metal), but I really don't know much about the Warhammer IP. Eagerly awaiting some in-depth reviews to surface.

Lancer: Narrative Characters & Tactical Mechs

A few of my friends and I have backed it. I think this is a good example of a genre that's wide open in the TTRPG offerings space.

    How serious is your d&d?

I think it's fine to play with avoiding character death if that's what makes the game most fun for your table. For me, if you cannot die, most consequences are temporary at best. I think it leads to characters bumbling forward. I enjoy the game most when the PCs are forced to put a lot of...

    How serious is your d&d?

I run a serious game with potentially brutal consequences born from an embraced player agency model. Stakes are high, PCs have little narrative armor (there have been deaths and one TPK).

If an NPC is telling the truth, what's the Insight DC to know they're telling the truth?

Disclaimer: I didn't read this entire thread. I let the player know what they think. I don't let them know if they were successful or not. I think it's a good roll to make on behalf of the player (like old school hidden detect trap rolls).

Dan Dillon is D&D's Newest Designer!

Happy for Dan, sad for BonesMcCoy.

    Frequency of death

I've had a TPK of 6 PCs (medusa + bad saving throws) and another time where 3 PCs died (and the rest of the PCs ran for their lives). It's a big assumption in our games that you'd even be able to find a cleric capable of casting a raise dead spell. I tend to run a decently rough game, but my...

Here Are The Most Popular D&D Feats (War Caster Leads The Pack!)

I think the warcaster popularity has more to do with the fact that are relatively few feats that benefit pure spellcasters.

    Tenfold Dungeons

Disclaimer: I don't know these guys or have anything to do with this Kickstarter. Just something I thought I'd share. Tenfold Dungeons are essential a series of chambers and corridors that build out a dungeon/scene made of cardboard boxes. The doors function as clips that holds everything together.

What is your campaign balance? Combat vs Social?

We're probably 60%/40% Social/Combat at our table. We run plenty of sessions were it's all (or mostly) talky-talk, but rarely run a session that's pure smacky-smack. Granted, most of our campaigns tend to have fairly complex elements, which necessitate the PCs talking to figure out just what the...
