    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

While this is quite true, its probably worth pointing out that the way that most gamers roll dice is NOT really completely random. There is a reason that in games where it really matters (eg, games like craps and backgammon where money can be involved) that you don't get to just sort of drop...

    Population growth formula?

Its probably worth emphasizing that semi -realistic numbers can vary HUGELY depending on your assumptions as to fertility level, carrying capacity of the land, etc, And the variance will go up greatly depending on the time. If you're talking 100 years then there could still be easily be a...

2E Legends & Lore; University Theology

Just when you thought that the reputation of American Education couldn't get any worse something like this comes along :-). I mean, come on. Legends and Lore as an academic resource? Either somebody is having somebody on or somebody is an ignorant buffoon. Even the barest, most superficial...

Grease (the Daily) is it Useful?

I love this spell, especially when combined with a nearby killer zone (wall of fire in one encounter, wall of blades in another). I set up a grease spell behind the combat and then kept thunderwaving people. We play that enter means what the English says it does so the push triggered it. Either...

    Entering a Zone

Nobody (including WOTC) seems to know. Different answers from different sources. And WOTC seemingly refuses to address this officially. For what its worth, for our group 1) It only counts if the creature moves, not if the zone moves. 2) You only take the damage from the zone once a turn...

Movement vs. Entering - Interesting CustServ Response

When it came up in game it was effective and amusing as heck. It combines VERY well with a Thunderwaving wizard. I most definitely wanted it to miss. Every time. Note - I have Rushing Cleats so I'm sliding 3 and not 2. Twice I slid an opponent into a wall of Blades for damage. Another time...

How much do characters know about game mechanics?

Mostly a rant but it speaks directly to the character knowledge question. I absolutely loathe the 4th edition diagonal rules. Especially since the 3rd edition ones were such an elegant solution. If you think about the implications of the rules then its clear that the physics of the DND world...

How much do characters know about game mechanics?

In previous editions I've always taken something of a middle ground. Clearly SOME of the game mechanics ARE visible to the character. A wizard knows when he acquires new spells, characters in the world realize that a gobln just can NOT hurt them when they're fresh and unwounded, everybody...

How High are bursts and blasts

The problem is that is that I'm planning on using my Dragonling familiar to "strafe" the enemy. Which means that I need to know what the rules are. Its not really fair to just wing it. I'm also very, very seriously considering getting an Ebony Fly as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

How important are item dailies, and item powers in general?

There are a reasonable number of items that are quite useful to have as a backup. Only a small percentage but still, in total, a fair number. As a wizard, Mnemonic staff is wonderful. As are the new books from Arcane Power. I'm seeing the Christmas Tree effect a lot more in 4th than I ever did...

How High are bursts and blasts

Thanks for the answers. Given the amount of flight that shows up at late heroic levels and above I'm kinda surprised that this wasn't actually determined by WOTC. I think that what makes sense to me is that bursts would have the vertical middle of the cube be at the caster (and ignore the...

How High are bursts and blasts

I can't seem to find this information anywhere. What are the vertical dimensions of a blast/burst spell? I;ve just acquired a dragonling familiar and I want him to use spells from the air without coming into melee distance. I'm guessing that the spell goes up and down the same vertical as...

    DDI Survey Results posted

One conclusion that I think that one can draw from the survey results is that the vast majority of respondants are DMs and not players. It doesn't overwhelmingly surprise me that DMs want other things more than the VTT.

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

Personally I believe that one of the significant factors driving the piracy is the absurd price that WOTC is charging for the pdfs. When the pdf costs more than the hardcopy does from amazon one would expect very few people to buy it. There are lots of people who bought the hardcover and got a...

Forked Thread: Arcane Power Excerpts: Cunning Weapons

The staff is described as "fashioned either as a quarterstaff or as a walking stick". Although there are no explicit rules, I'd claim that a wallking stick is wielded by one hand.

Forked Thread: Arcane Power Excerpts: Cunning Weapons

If one cannot use a cunning longsword with spells doesn't that make the Eladrin Sword feat and the WotS Paragon Path close to useless, at least for straight wizards? You get to do a little more damage with a melee sword attack and an opportunity attack. Be still my beating heart :-).

    Index of attack/defense boosters?

Defensive Staff (AV). Adds an item bonus to defences which stacks with the enhancement bonus from your amulet

    Spirit Talker

If one takes the Spirit Talker feat (ie, multiclasses into Shaman) does your spirit get the Spirit Boon effect? I'm guessing that they shouldn't (it arguably makes the feat too strong) but the wording certainly seems to imply that they do.

    Buffy RPG

One thing that the system does VERY well is to let the less powerful characters still contribute to combat. The Slayer kicks ass but it is very clear that she'd have lost the battle without the supporting characters. This is done mostly by the game mechanic involving multiple attackers...

    Arane Trickster

I'd like to get some opinions on how balanced the Arcane Trickster is. At first blush, it seems quite overpowered. Its MUCH more powerful than a rogue/wizard would be. If you compare it to a character who advances two levels of spell caster for every level of rogue it 1) Gets better spell...
