Low Damage, High HP ... How is this "Faster"?

That is similar to what I am thinking. Faster does not mean the combat will end quicker, faster means that you don't have to wait as long for your turn to come up again. Thus the game plays faster but takes about the same amount of time.

Tactical vs. Freeform Combat: How do you blend it?

I voted handwaving. Not because we don't like combat mechanics, but rather because no-one but me (the DM) owns the books for 3.0 (and I don't own 3.5). I think 4E will help us out a lot as if the rule is written on the page it is going to get played. My wife plays a fighter in many games, and...

    Monster Design--from a designer's standpoint

I recall hearing from one designer about 3E (Actually I think it was a game designer who had spoken with 3E guys when making a PC game off of the new 3d edition rules so technically this is hearsay (sp?)). Anyway I heard that the prime reason they went with set powers and cookie cutter...

    minor actions

Yes you can substitute a lesser action in for a greater. Standard > Movement > Minor. Now if I just can remember where I read that. :) Edit: Wow people REALLY do reply quick... Ok I guess that really anaswers it.

    My XP at DDXP

Of all the things I have heard so far, this too is the most worrisome. However I think the key here is that the need to remember what is going on is shared. The fighter only has to worry about marking, if the DM forgets I'm sure the fighter will remind him. The character that can act on...

    Collected DDXP Preview Pages

Sorry but I don't figure out the context in which the above statement was framed. Why does the wand of +5 help so much?

    Collected DDXP Preview Pages

Looks easier to me. I always HATED when a monster entry mentioned spell powers. Oh great, now I have two books open to play the monster. With these monsters it is all right there. It feels very 1st edition to have monsters that have unique powers rather than sharing a bunch of common powers...

    Grognards?

Well being 40 now I resemble that remark :) While I have not been hostile to anyone, I am frustrated that people are slamming 4E in a section dedicated to 4E. When 3E showed up, I heard the EXACT same arguments. “it is now Roll-Playing” , “It is too much like a tactical board game”… “It’s a...

    D&D 4E I have seen the coming of 4e...

I played a pre-release version of 3E and it had a magic missile that missed. They also had exception based monsters( a dog that when it attacked would hold onto you and slow you down is what I remember most. When the real MM came out I was disapointed ). Oh and the mosnters had with XP values...

Per Encounter Powers Outside of Encounters

Ok well I can only give an opinion, but that was a lame DM ruling. What is that DM going to say next, that the fighter can't use his power attack (the 3d8 one) on a door. Unless one of his friends is attacking a kobold? Perhaps the party should cage a kobold and let him loose every time a...

D&D 4E 4E Popularity Contest: Which D&D Experience preview character is your favorite?

I voted Fighter because... I have always loved playing fighters and rangers, but hated how after a few levels the wizards and clerics stole the show. Now I get a fighter with bone crushing powers. Me Like. (Now I just have to figure out how to train one of my players to be a DM :) ). JesterOC

    What's all this re-roll stuff?

How is this, imagine as your blade is hurling towards your target, you notice it dodging in a direction you did not expect. As the blade is still swinging you twist your body to try to compensate. That last second compensation is your reroll. And the points can be considered a surge of energy...
