    Variety of "Old Schools"

The problem with this is that Matt Finch's Quick Primer is a very good introduction to playing the OD&D clone Swords and Wizardry but it is not, and according to Mr Finch isn't intended to be, a guide to all things 'old school.' The notion that 'old school' is defined exclusively by OD&D is...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

No, I'm talking about the same encounter, which is why I think this is an interesting conceptual model but one which breaks down in practice - at least for those of us playing something other than D&D.

I dunno. I think of swashbucklers in a tavern. One minute you're dueling a guy, and the next you're dropping a chandelier on his friends' heads.

Yup, with a hint of the excluded middle in which both combat-as-sport and combat-as-war exist side-by-side in the same campaign. Could someone please XP Rogue Agent for me?

    Do you mark your books?

And now I'm wondering why I never did this! That sounds like fun.

    Do you mark your books?

I highlight, annotate with margin notes, and illustrate with diagrams the pages of my gaming books.

    Mechanical Decision making for GMs

Part of using random tables is fitting the results to the context in which they occur. It's because there are a million variables and cause-and-effect that I like randomly-generated results. :erm: I think only doing what's logical to you is a crutch for those who lack imagination. Or maybe...

Social Skills, starting to bug me.

Since I can't improve on any of these, I'll just add, "Worth repeating."

Players: Do you wear/carry "props" to the game?

    Dice and a pencil.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Games have not improved. They have diversified in approach and they have increased in complexity, but they are not better or more advanced - they are simply different.

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Yup. So one of the things that games need to do is teach both referees and players how to do this.

For me, one of the very best things about roleplaying games is that I can throw that expectation nonsense right out the :):):):)ing window. Of course, I also like movies where a main character dies unexpectedly before the end, frex, . Yes, win or lose, encounters should have consequences. I...

Tony, can I suggest that you stop referring to games as "primitive" or "rudimentary?" And Top Secret drew a big chunk of its firearms system inspiration from Boot Hill, but they're not the same.
