VT(virtual table) alternative to D&D Insider

Theoretically, you could use Google docs or something like ditzie.

    Battlefields versus the 5' dungeon.

In the games that I run, we use a "standard marching order" so that, for most instances, we already know how the party will be positioned when trouble starts. For situations when the party would be out of the standard marching order (such as when searching an area for loot or when they've just...

    Ready an Action: valid conditions

Some readied actions are more likely to trigger than others. "I shoot the first person that comes through the door." may never trigger if no one comes through the door before the ready-er's turn comes around again. "I shoot the halfling if he does anything." is pretty likely to trigger...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5e Warshaper

In the game that I'm running, I allow the warshaper character to add dangerous bits too body parts that he already has, but not to gain new body parts with his morphic weaponry ability. i.e. a humanoid has a head (horns, bite) two arms (claws, slam) and two legs (claws, kick) whereas a spider...

    Let's be racist!

Q: What's the difference between an orc and an onion? A: Nobody cries when you cut up an orc.

Oops, I failed a Breathe check

You should punch your DM in the liver. They hate that.

    Nexus Tactics Skill

Here's what I've got for the Tactics skill in my homebrewed d20 system. it is based primarily off of Star Wars Saga Edition... Tactics (Wis) The tactics skill represents your knowledge of combat tactics and is used primarily to gain advantage or to grant advantage to your allies in combat...

    Running This with That

I played in an Eberron game using the Mutants and Masterminds system, and a Firefly game using Starwars SAGA Edition.

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

My characters always have a background, I am just very rarely inclined to write it down...

Should PCs be forced to act a certain way because of their stats?

This is how I see things, as well. If I am playing a barbarian, and we come upon a logic puzzle, I am free to discuss the elements of the puzzle and come up with the solution out of character, but it should probably be the wizard character who reveals the solution in character.

Should strong players have an advantage?

There's got to be a way to substitute Str for Cha in this case. ;)

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

I tend to use 'built-in cheats' like the hero point mechanic from Mutants and Masterminds, rather than other forms of cheating. Making it codified in such a way helps it to sit better with me than more underhanded methods.

    Flat-footed, surprise and initative.

When someone (outside of combat) says that they get ready for some eventuality, I give them a +2 circumstance bonus to their initiative check if that eventuality comes to pass.

What Rules Sources Do You Allow?

I allow pretty much anything until it actually causes a problem in the game, then I have the player change it.

    Does It Fit?

Something that you could do, is to make body type/size depend on the physical attributes. Add together Strength and Con, then subtract Dexterity. If the values are within X amount of each other, the armor fits well. Otherwise it fits poorly...

I need my PC's put be captured. Help

First, you should get the players to agree to it... Then you should start out the adventure, "You've been captured and are being held in [blah]." And finally, you should allow the players some coolness in the face of the capture... The rogue has sneaked in a weapon unbeknown to his captors...

    Ima whip lord yo

You can use two whips... But since they are one-handed (not light) weapons, you'll take some extra penalties when two-weapon fighting this way.

    Needs Encounter Building Tips

Multiple critters of the same Challenge Rating combine oddly... 2 critters of CR equals (about) 1 critter of CR +2. Determining the Encounter Level of multiple critters is even more wonky than using the CR of a single critter. It is very easy to get combinations that are much weaker or much...

    Retcon Character question

I'm generally inclined to allow character changes. After all, if something appears not to be working at the table, I will ask the player to change it, so why wouldn't I allow the player the same leeway?
