What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

Oh, I have no problem ditching the Avenger, or Runepriest, or even the Samurai. Though the Samurai is very flavorful. I think if the niche filled by the character archetype is distinct enough then, yes, it does warrant inclusion. No, you can't force a player to roleplay through rules. Which...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

So what rules are you quoting to support your point of view. And yes, I threw a 2000 pound throne out there as an example of a piece of treasure that would be difficult to remove from a dungeon. Would you consider a 20 pound piece of treasure an obstacle? No shifting goal post - the point all...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

You say that like roleplaying is a minimal concern. A paladin DOES get some bells and whistles, but they're not the defining element of the class. Why does paladin need to be a class? Because a fighter, cleric, any combination of both, regardless of how it's flavoured, themed, backgrounded...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

Paladins are a class that really rely on fluff, and exist largely for rping. I'll never accept paladins of any alignment. The behavioral restrictions that come with being Lawful Good are too important in balancing their advantages. Play a paladin when you want to roleplay chivalry. If your...

"That spear would have skewered a wild boar!" : Should Heavy armor negate crits?

It's hard to say if there's really even a problem with armor yet. WotC has already come out and stated that the armor table in the playtest packet is filler, isn't what they'll be going with, and is undergoing change. As far as adding "Eliminates Crits" to heavy armor goes, would you consider...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

I think his intention was "If the DMG had ways of generating random dungeons, those dungeons couldn't be expected to be living environments due to their not having been planned or thought out beforehand." Or so I construed his intent to be. I don't feel random dungeons make turning the results...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

No reason those rules can't apply to a randomly generated dungeon. Castle, tower, stronghold, etc...a dungeon by any other name smells just as dank. Now, if you want a real gp for xp arguement...should players get that xp for gp BEFORE or AFTER taxes, tithing, tributes, etc? Do they lose xp...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

Not in the least. AD&D DMG pgs 104 - 105 outlines 6 different example scenarios featuring monsters of various intelligence and provides 2 different examples for each demonstrating how the behavior of those monsters or the scenario would be different were the party to disengage the encounter...

A word of caution to the " put it all in a module" arguments

Hopefully modules don't operate like splat books - adding an ever increasing array of choices. To maintain balance, what a module giveth, a module taketh away. So if a module adds metamagic feats, it eliminates another spellcasting option - say, preparing spells in higher level slots. Or...

The (Non-)Playtest Experience, or How the Hit Die Mechanic was a Non-Starter

How did the OP even become friends with someone like this? D&D is a social game, it wouldn't matter what the system was, playing with a guy like this wouldn't be good under any circumstances. Why would a group of people even let a single chump dictate their activities to them? Does he have...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

1e adventures did NOT have living dungeon design - that's not a statement you can make. You can say "SOME 1e adventures..." but you can't say that none of them did. You also can't say that the ones that didn't weren't made living by their DMs, because I know many who did just that - according to...

"That spear would have skewered a wild boar!" : Should Heavy armor negate crits?

No. Any added effects to armor require rebalancing hp for all classes, whether it's dr, reducing damage dice, increasing hp, or anything else. Not worth the trouble. Starts a slippery slope. Armor increases ac. Leave secondary effects to magic armor.

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

By the way, Hussar, you've actually insulted me twice now. I'm not the kind of guy who whines to mods with the slightest provocation, but maybe you should relax a little before you wind up wandering the steam tunnels. It's D&D. It's actually a really stupid, nerdy game. Nothing to get worked...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

As already mentioned a couple of times, there are very clear rules describing the value of treasure in relation to the challenge of getting it. Sorry - when you said you brought a wagon, I assumed you meant, y'know...a wagon...not a little Red Flyer. Oh, but wait...you left your wagon and...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

It wasn't broken until the pcs came along and started bashing him with maces, poking him with pointy swords, and blasting him with magic missles. Up until then it was cutting edge goblin fashion. And really? Are you aware of the typical goblin's bathroom habits? Would you really wear used...

Will the real Mike Mearls please stand up?

Player entitlement has gone to far when a game designer is expected to justify his decisions like he's an elected official tasked with protecting the public trust. Mearls is a guy with a job. His personal opinions don't count. The company line counts. If the company is promoting 4e, he's...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

Here's why you should re-read your AD&D DMG, and this wasn't meant to be an insult, demeaning, or superior. It's because all you arguements were countered before you ever made them. You want to head off to the dungeon with a wagon and mule. Fine, but like I pointed out, the terrain...

D&D 5E My D&D Next Wishlist: Bring back XP for GP!

Sounds more to me like the DM not bothering to think things through and make the scenario realistic or challenging. If you can't see the flaws in your statements you need to go back and re-read your AD&D DMG.

A plea to stop over-complicating the base system.

Probably. But in the meantime it's drowning out constructive conversation. Ironically, it's all these armchair game designers with grandioise ideas about how to "improve" D&D, criticizing the actual designers for their "mistakes", who fail in the very first step of design - understand and...

A plea to stop over-complicating the base system.

There's nothing wrong with making suggestions and offering feedback, but too often those suggestions and feedback are so overly complicated and elaborate that they are essentially creating a new game system that doesn't adhere and are completely out of line with the design goals. At that point...
