D&D General Tell us about yourself

    31. Born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Received my bachelors from the UW and then worked as a bartender for three years before moving to Germany to do my masters. I've been in Germany for around four years now and don't plan on leaving. I currently work in education. My German skills are...

Are Video Games Ruining Your Role-playing?

My group and I are all new to D&D and ttrpgs in general (starting in 2018), but since we range from mid-20's to early 30's we're all video game literate, so some aspects of the games were really easy to pick up. At the same time, I've noticed we've had to unlearn some things that are the norm in...

Corned Beef & Cabbage: A Dwarven Feast?

As someone who lives an hour away from the Alps, having dwarves raise cows doesn't seem particularly implausible to me. Cows and dairy products have a major economic and cultural significance in the alpine regions (see the wikipedia article on transhumance) and it would be odd for a...

D&D 5E Decoupling Smite from spell slots?

You should meet my current paladin player. Dude almost refuses to use smite.

    But they do wink suggestively.

    D&D (2024) Will you buy 5.5e/6e PHB?

Firmly undecided. I think it's far too early for me to make a decision, especially with there being so little information on what this edition will actually entail.

D&D (2024) What would your ideal rest mechanic look like?

I can't really think of an ideal system (I'm not a game designer), but I don't like an approach the reinforces proficiency bonus as the master dial to be tweaked for game balance.

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

I liked episodes 4-6 more than the previous three. The show hasn't completely won me over, and I still think most of the humor falls a bit flat. The tentacle gag with Scanlan was eye-rolling. However, Grog calling Percy a buzzkill during the campfire scene did get a laugh from me.

D&D 5E How to "fix" (or at least help) the fighter/wizard dynamic. (+)

I really hope that the 2024 edition, if it makes any substantial changes, gives Fighters maneuvers as a class-wide feature, with subclasses getting special maneuvers based on their archetype. The Fighter being mechanically dull as hell is, in my opinion, a big problem. I would also comb through...

D&D General Do you use Alignment in your D&D games?

Nope. I don't bother with alignment as described in the PHB. I quickly stopped using it after my first campaign and haven't missed it since. The closest I get is a vague concept of Order vs Chaos, but this is only used at a grand scale.

D&D 5E Orcs and Drow in YOUR game (poll */comments +)

Drow don't exist in my setting at present. I also don't use alignment. Orcs are one of the major races in my setting and are just as likely to be allies as they are enemies.

    D&D 5E Peasant Revolts in 5e

Given the right circumstances, a peasant rebellion could do quite well for itself.

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

Not to be that guy but a critic saying "it's fine" would be a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic has it at a more modest 81 critic score (with only 4 reviews) and 7.9 audience score. Neither site is perfect though 🤷‍♂️

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

I thought the first three episodes were just okay. It didn't pull me in like with other recent adult animation shows such as Invincible or Arcane, and some of the more juvenile antics just had me rolling my eyes, especially everything involving Scanlan. I'll keep watching, since the time...

D&D 5E Arguing, ideating and solution-seeking on the D&D Enworld forum

Being mostly a lurker during the more heated threads, my perspective is that there's "missing the forest for the trees" and there's "arguing over whether what we're looking at is really a tree or a tall shrub". Threads seem to always descend towards the latter.

D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

Or quickly review your country's local and national laws regarding liability so you can make a decision based on sound legal understanding. As one normally does during an unforseen and time-sensitive ethical dillemma.

Depending on the country, doing nothing could actually make you legally liable.

What's the internet equivalent of "take it outside you two"? Asking for a friend.

D&D General I really LOVE Stomping Goblins

I try to take that approach nowadays. Intelligent enemies will flee or surrender when things go south, even make oaths never to bother the party ever again.
