Racial Level Limits: Did you Use Them?

In 1e characters in our game leveled (and still do) about the same rate as they do in 3e/PF up until around 10th or so. We put all the magic item/treasure XP into a pot to split among the party along with monster/adventure XP. I like the level limits and don't think they are dumb at all.

Racial Level Limits: Did you Use Them?

We just use the spells, level limits, few races, and weapon specialization (for fighters only).

Racial Level Limits: Did you Use Them?

We do as well but we use increased XP (usually double) to bypass it. It helps to also use the higher limits from UA and we use these limits as default even if the PC does not have higher score. I don't think its a bad rule (level limits) and we like level limits.

Racial Level Limits: Did you Use Them?

For 1e we did (and do) use the level limits but the ones in UA not the PHB. Sometimes we have allowed folks to rise above the limits with divine (big time, not from a 9th level spell) wishes or just double xp. Case by case.

Which editions of D&D do you own the core books for?

I can take a 5 min jaunt to Half Price books and get 1e/2e core books easy. Or ebay of course.... I had the 4e PHB but traded it for some AD&D stuff earlier in the year. :) Everyone in my game group has always had the AD&D books, even when we played 4e.

Next year, I'm back to running AD&D

Leveling in 1e is pretty close to 3e if you actually give xp for gp and magic items. But, its hard to tell especially if you run your own stuff and don't use modules. Most XP comes from the loot though.

Praise and element or aspect of a game or edition you don't like.

Congrats on taking things too serious. Besides I like the binding on the DMG as well.

Holy sheepdip - wotc to republish old editions

I would buy 1e/2e PRINT products....nothing else interests me. I already have all the pdfs of 1e/2e anyway and I don't use them. I still would rather have actual new books instead of having to ebay/used book store scavenge hunts.

    Maps/Tiles or Dry/Wet Erase?

We don't use either. We use a Chessex battle mat with a thin sheet of Plexi glass over it. Same mat since the early 90's and it still looks brand new. We have replaced the Plexi 4 times over the years, and each time its cheap. You can use wet erase on the plexi I guess, but we just use grease...

    your penalty for character death

Our process: 1) Cast Speak with Dead: "Do you want to come back to the land of the living." 2) If the answer is yes, then they will come back. Whatever it takes, and if they cannot afford the required spell then its an opportunity for a Quest (the Cleric needs some special herb for his soup...

    Mallus Rediscovers AD&D

That's actually a very interesting little twist that I would like to try out. Right now we only make those casting a spell declare ahead of time, but we are always open to try new things.
