Advantage & Disadvantage - Looking for a synopsis

The biggest difference is more in how DCs work; they don't scale nearly as much as in previous editions, they only very rarely get modified, most circumstantial modifiers are part of Advantage/Disadvantage and so on. There's a fixed table of generic difficulties that DMs can use for practically...

D&D 5E Would you be okay with class abilities that explicitly addressed multi-classing?

The various 5e AC calculation methods already cancel each-other out and make players choose between them (such as the various unarmoured defense features vs regular armor), which makes for a more elegant system. I don't see what this extra complexity really brings. Multi-classing is also an...

Thought experiment: human and variant stats as expressions of culture

Adventures in Middle Earth does something similar where almost every Human culture has +1 to one fixed ability, two +1 ability choices, one pre-determined skill proficiency, and a free feat to pick from a culture-specific feat list. It allows for very flavourful and meaningful differences...

Upcoming products will "touch on cultures that don't usually get exposure."

I think so too. 'We' is probably them as individual people, and most (if not all) of the WOTC staff didn't work there when all those other FR sub-settings were released decades ago.

D&D 5E What kind of character would you play?

I'm also 'stuck' as a DM. Not sure I could actually quit it, though. Of course, one can still dream. I've thought of two characters I'd make: Human Valor Bard A northern skald in his late 50's with one eye missing (hence low WIS), with a long history of travelling who's since ran out of...

tail wags dog: streamers want to say 'aaargh' so we are getting a pirate adventure

I'm already ignoring the majority of the release schedule and not following streamers, just having semi-regular games of D&D at my brother's house. I hope I'm not playing the game wrong.

D&D 5E How exactly does the Feywild time warp work? (Can it be used for going back in time?)

What I mean is that it shouldn't obey ordinary laws of logic, especially when it comes to magical effects (fey magic should be weird and counter-untuitive; cruel and capricious but not random for the sake of it, as Limbo is). Oisín returning from Tír na nÓg and instantly aging as time catches up...

D&D 5E How exactly does the Feywild time warp work? (Can it be used for going back in time?)

If it's not a paradox you're not doing the Feywild right.

What Are Your DM New Year's Resolutions?

4 months in my resolutions are typical newbie-DM-stuff: cut down on the meta-gaming at the table, worry less, place more emphasis on descriptions. As a DM I set the tone, and I'm still a bit too focused on trying to get the game aspects 'right' I sometimes forget to emphasise the fantasy of it...

    Shooting down LEGIT character concepts

Basically everything that's not in the PHB and not marked optional is subject to GM approval, though I'm not very strict at that. Mind, my players aren't very powergamey, so it hasn't really been an issue yet; they always put RPing first, so they don't go for incongruous choices for mechanical...

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

Yeah, with 5e combats only lasting about 3 or 4 rounds at most, common per-encounter powers wouldn't really work.

    Most frustrating quirk of 5E?

A DM can deal with this by dangling magical items that have certain bonuses in front of them. It's easy to choose plate when the alternative is splint or half plate, but if you can also get a +1 mithral chainmail and you know you're going to sneak around a lot, that's a more interesting choice...

    D&D 5E Nightwalker: Really a CR 20?

Xanathar's says it's lvl 15 for 6 players, lv 17 for 4 players, all for a medium encounter. Lvl 13 is a bit tougher but still doable, again according to the book. Though I wouldn't necessarily use it as a solo monster, as it doesn't have any legendary actions and the like. It's more like a...

DMsGuild: D&D Style-Guides give a unique insight into the game

This is what the style guide says about it in full, and it lists pretty much everything mentioned above: Their indices have gotten a lot better over the years, so at least they're getting a bit more internally consistent.

DMsGuild: D&D Style-Guides give a unique insight into the game

That adventure design guide is actually quite good. More adventure designers ought to read it, really.

    D&D General Welcome Thread

Hi everyone, I'm excited to join this esteemed community. I've been DM-ing 5e for a few months now and recently started our first actual campaign, rather ambitiously combining stuff from several books. Reading about D&D is quite different from actually running it, but it's been a blast so far...
