    D&D 5E Online Campaign Journal

Thanks for sharing! I love the map of your world. Did you use Campaign Cartographer or something else?

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

Agreed. I stumbled across an excellent article a few years ago which I've instituted as mandatory reading for all players who are new to my game: 11 Ways to Be A Better Roleplayer.

D&D 5E there aren't enough slow Dwarves with Axes! ;)

Before discussing your changes to the rules, can you elaborate a bit more on the problem you are trying to solve? How can a party of characters that are focused purely on ranged combat consistently prevent the monsters from forcing them into melee combat? I am genuinely curious. In the games...

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

"My character wouldn't do that" was a catchphrase much heard at my table for decades. It was often a game stopper for us, so I for one am glad to see it replaced in recent years with, "OK, so why would my character do that? ... I know! It's because of X, Y, and Z."

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

For an example from the core rulebooks, note that the original DMG had tables for NPC personality traits. I'm sure there are other examples from the original core books, but my memory is not what it used to be. The article mentioned by LowKey is a perfect piece of corroborating evidence...

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

I don't agree with your premise that the books didn't encourage roleplaying prior to AD&D2E. Take a look at the player characters described in the back of the original Rogue's Gallery published back in 1980...

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

This statement strikes me as particularly absurd. As I stated in an earlier post, my group and I were roleplaying and crafting detailed backstories for our characters as far back as 1978. Story and character development were center stage for us from the very first. I very much doubt that we...

D&D 5E Role playing and wargaming

A lot of people on these boards seem to project from their own experiences when making generalizations about the evolution of D&D. I started playing D&D in 1978, and from the very beginning, I was crafting detailed backstories for all of my characters and very much focused on 'roleplaying', and...

Help Coming up with first 8 levels of my Rogue/Ranger(revised)

Crossbow Expert is also very good, especially when combined with Hunter's Quarry, Colossus Slayer, and any static bonuses you might have. I would strive to pick up both feats. Which you choose first is a matter of personal preference. In practice, I find that the +20 per round additional...

Help Coming up with first 8 levels of my Rogue/Ranger(revised)

Personally, I think you should strive to get to Ranger 5 as quickly as possible. Since you are set on starting as a rogue, I'd recommend the following progression: 1. Rogue 1: Sneak Attack 1d6, Extra Skill, Expertise (Stealth, Perception) 2. Ranger 1: Favored Enemy, Natural Explorer 3. Ranger...

D&D 5E The Misrepresentation of Charisma

I roleplay my Charisma 8 character as a bit of a lemming: lacking in confidence, irresolute, and easily swayed. He is not a boorish ass; he is just a nonentity who lacks a voice of his own.

D&D 5E Adventurer's Gallery: NPC List, would there be an interest?

Rogue's Gallery was one of my favorite supplements when it first came out. That had a lot less to do with the generic stats than it did with the background write-ups for characters like Bigby, Erac's Cousin, Lassiviren, Mordenkainen, etc. I derived a lot of inspiration from those characters. It...

D&D 5E Characters are not their statistics and abilities

I'm with @dave2008 on this. I've been playing since 1978 and I never even heard of power-gaming until the late 90s when I first encountered RPG forums. My first character was a morbidly obese tonsured cleric who preached the gospel of the God of Plenty, wielded a leg of lamb like a mace, and...

    D&D 5E I need good ideas

I am sorry to inform you that this campaign has a life expectancy of between 2 and 10 sessions if you continue down the path you're on. If you're reconciled to that fact and want to go through with it anyway, then just drop a cyanide capsule into the paladin's bowl of Frosted Faith Nuggets...

D&D 5E Is the Help action broken?

Any sufficiently annoyed opponent with a ranged attack or the ability to ready an action can partake of a quick owl snack whenever the fancy strikes him. I agree that familiars are not broken.

    D&D 5E Rules you ignore

I always forget to give characters with darkvision disadvantage on their perception checks when they are moving through a region of darkness without a light source (darkness should be treated as dim light, which imposes disadvantage on perception checks). Consistently forgetting to do something...
