D&D General Should Baldur's Gate 3 be turnbased or Real Time With Pause?

If it's not real time with pause (like its predecessors), I'll probably skip it.

    D&D 2E Returning to 2nd Edition

(quote abbeviated for space) You are too right. I will say, 5e gives a VERY enjoyable gaming experience. That consistency however is it's weak point. It gets rid of the lows, but also the highs, leaving you with a consistently fun experience lacking the transcendence occasionally achieved by...

What do you love about your favorite edition that ISN’T rules related?

That font is called Souvenir; you're right-it's awesome. I found it a few years ago when I was going to create my own file for the 5e basic rules.

What do you love about your favorite edition that ISN’T rules related?

Rules aside, my favorite edition is the 70's iteration of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons up through the release of Unearthed Arcana. I love the art, I love the writing, I even love the font. Playing make believe feels at first like a child's occupation, so having a game presented in an adult way...

    D&D 2E Returning to 2nd Edition

Thanks...looks like a good replacement for level limits.

    D&D 5E Proficiency vs Non-Proficiency

Let's consider however, that lack of proficiency doesn't necessarily mean lack of skill or training, just that only has "basic" skill (ie, they only roll with their stat, which represents general training with all sorts of skills).

The way I do it, it is.

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

Speaking for myself, every edition of D&D has its strong points, and depending on what I'm interested in, every one has its charms. But the ones that get my motor running are 1st edition AD&D and B/X. While I'm sure my love for them is based, at least in part, on a fair bit of nostalgia...

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

This is a common mistake, and understandable. I know a lot of 1st edition games that played exactly thus. That impression has led to a whole host of players moving to skill based systems over the decades.

Rules, too much or too little? YOU DECIDE!

Couple points: 1) The guards are not necessarily the same effort, individually, as Dirk, but they could be the same effort in a group, or, even if they were less effort--they should be some effort, so need to provide some level of expenditure of resources--which is why you can't just handwave...

Rules, too much or too little? YOU DECIDE!

Because the extra detail is fun! Sometimes you just want to resolve the quick fight with the guards in a few rolls; other times, like in the climactic duel with Dirk the Dastard, one wants to dive deep and hash out every single swing, every parry and riposte. It's whatever is fun at the time...

Rules, too much or too little? YOU DECIDE!

Hmmm... I will admit to wanting to have my cake and eat it too. I desire a system that allows me to ramp up, or ramp down the system complexity to suit the needs of my game or encounter, at that moment. I want a game that lets me handle a check with a handwave and a die roll when appropriate...

    It's a Good Thing D&D Isn't a Toy

Live action television would work...Xena and Hercules made it work two decades ago. They're not even a bad formula to use. A couple adventurers wander around and help people in trouble. Each week they team up with a local somebody who points them in the proper direction, they solve a problem...

    Playing the underdogs

This is one of those topics that always cause me to wonder, "what does this person mean by underpowered?" Some people like the challenge of taking an apparently underpowered choice, and through clever optimization, or top notch gameplay, dominate anyway. I find this no different than those who...

    D&D 5E Kids playing dnd?

What I've done in the past is just run it, let them engage at the level that they want and are able to. Kids are far more intelligent than we give them credit for being, and it's better to give them more than you think they can handle (because you'll always underestimate them) and expect them...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

It's not really about "ease" of encounters...but speed and expected outcome; for instance in a bog standard mid level 5e game, fireball isn't a bad news explosive bomb that ends encounters, and leaves a trail of burned bodies, but a tool to lower the hit point level of an encounter to allow each...

Trying to make 5e more oldish and want some people's opinions

Great idea! (and I like 2e's initiative rules)--by which I mean, making 5e a bit more old school; not upgrading from 2e. I think one of the best things you can do is cut monster hit points by about a third...which should have the effect of speeding things up and alleviating the issue with...

D&D 5E Art and Arcana: A visual History just arrived!

Thanks; that's exactly what I wanted to know. The thing that has me most interested is the early art up through, say 1981. I've got a complete collection of the D&D artbooks that came out in the 80's and 90's, which cover only the art from about 82 on--sadly. I'm not really interested in the...
