D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

When I play, I have no real concern if the DM rolls in the open or not. When I DM in-person, I tend to roll behind a screen because I like having a screen in front of me to cover maps and notes and rolling around the screen is a pain. At the moment, my games are on Roll20, I asked the...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I have no preference for PC death frequency. Voted every 2 to 3 levels as that seems what I expect on average. As an old-schooler, I don't provide plot armour to the PCs if they die, they die. They usually have access to raise dead and the like, but at a cost.

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

Yes. I started in 1978, probably one of the Basic games, I don’t recall as I didn’t own any of the books or even the dice. Quickly moved into AD&D and mostly stuck with the 1E core rules for man years, adding in bits and bobs from 2E. Sometime in the 90's I stopped playing as the group drifted...

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

For 40+ yers, I used a screen when I DM’d. Usually my old orange AD&D screen with the current edition rules paper-clipped on it. I only ran 2 or 3 sessions of 5E in-person before COVID struck. The next 35+ sessions of that game were online. I have not DM’d since, but should be taking the reins...

D&D 5E At what level do your heavy armored characters get their plate mail?

I voted third level because my players tend to pay for it as a group. They like the front-liner to be able to take more hits so they don’t get targeted!

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

In 1982 I rolled up a PC named Alpine, an elf fighter/magic-user/thief. No family name or back story as it was likely that he would die or he would not be used once the module was done. To provide so clarity other PCs rolled in the same timeframe included Blaupunkt, Kenwood, and Jensen. Alpine...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

True enough. But choosing to include it in the rules books, in the manner in which it is presented was a conscious decision.

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

Reynard nails my feelings, exactly. I agree with Riggs’ post, as it squares with my thoughts about EGG. I’m a bit surprised, because I don’t usually find Riggs’ commentary to have the rigour that I see from Peterson. I’m curious what credentials are required to be a “D&D Historian”?

D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

I assume you are equating a 1st level wizard casting Feather Fall to my example of old-school fighters stepping off cliffs. Old-school 1st level wizards typically had 3 or 4 hit points, and rarely had Feather Fall in their book of 5 spells. And to clarify, the problem being solved is 100 hp...

D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

    My current house rule: 10 ft. (3) 1d6 20 ft. (7) 2d6 30 ft. (14) 4d6 40 ft. (24) 7d6 50 ft. (38) 11d6 60 ft. (56) 16d6 70 ft. (77) 22d6 80 ft. (101) 29d6 90 ft. (129) 37d6 100 ft. (161) 46d6 I’ve been playing long enough to remember high level fighters purposely jumping off...

D&D 5E How would YOU nerf the wizard? +

Lots of interesting ideas in this thread. A number of people hearken back to the wizards from AD&D, but as someone who started playing back in the late 70’s, I humbly disagree. Reducing the wizard’s HD for 6 to 4 doesn’t work for me, as 5E monsters hit harder and more frequently than in 1E. My...

Setting Design: As Written, GM Homebrew, or Group Collaboration?

I only run 5E D&D games at the moment. For my current campaign I used the Forgotten Realms as the backdrop and added my non-FR modules and homebrew. I treat FR as a very large map, and I will pull bits and pieces of the official lore if I need it, but for the most part the canonical lore and...

D&D 5E GM: Who Do You Target? [READ OP BEFORE VOTING]

I stand corrected. The scenario is very hypothetical, but as DM I would have the BBEG: Drop the fighter in melee range with the spell. Grab the fighter’s weapon. Move and Misty Step to cover.

Voted none of the above since one key point is missing what attribute saves against the spell? Choose the most likely to fail.

D&D 5E [+] How do you make 5E more challenging?

This is definitely how I am leaning. I am taking a break from DM’g at the moment and I started on a House Rules document and it is quite long! I generally use max HP for all monsters; I give them better weapons if it makes sense; and I always have more than the bog-standard creature in a group...

D&D General Is WotC's 5E D&D easy? Trust me this isn't what you think... maybe

I’m voting a tentative no. I’ve only DM’d LMOP and I TPK’d the group in the Cragmaw Cave (I had them taken hostage). I’ve played part of WDH, and I thought it was tough, as a mystery, as combat was secondary (which I liked). As an old-school player/DM, I like combat to be dangerous, and I...

D&D General Keep on the Borderlands - How do you run the Wilderness?

This is how i (vaguely) recall playing B2 back in the day. The Keep was home base where treasure was spent and XP awarded, and the Caverns were the dungeon to pillage. The road between was inconsequential. To be honest, the only part of B2 that I ever really liked was the Keep. I find the...
