D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

Oh, I'd stick with just the dretches, or have a three way fight between the naga guardian, gargoyles, and the party. No reason the two monster groups would be pals or anything.

    D&D 5E Conjure Animals NERFED

Someone somewhere made a random table for all the 5e conjure spells. I copied it and let the player roll on that. I also bring back the same creatures, so they're familiar with the players (and cuts down on the number of characters I have to play). Never had a complaint - of course, the...

D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

We only did one session of G1 at 8th level (5 PCs) before the group quit. The entire hall had like twenty something hill giants, a fire giant, frost giant, several cloud giants and bunch of other creatures (1e loved the giant mobs - "You see 5-50 goblins!"). Attacking them together at once...

D&D 5E OotA - Arriving at Velkynvelve (Spoilers)

We're playing this at the FLGS. The DM actually had two modules ready to go - this and some third party one. He basically set up a combat encounter after we RP'ed meeting (at a tavern, naturally) so that players who were new to DnD/unfamiliar with 5e could get acclimated with the ins and outs...

D&D 5E Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

Most games I've DM'ed for adults (DM'ing for my son and his friends is entirely different) the players start out Neutral and become Good as the main plot kicks in. "OK, now that I've done whatever was necessary to buy gear and level up, it's time to save the world!" sort of maturation.

D&D 5E Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

And that, to me, is the cardinal sin - Evil, Good, or Neutral.

D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

Great point. That distinction, the change towards 'why is this here?' of modern module construction from the older module's 'it's just here to be here', is really important to consider. TSR adventures, especially dungeons, had so many challenges that seem perfunctory, as if there has to be a...

D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

This has been pretty thoroughly covered by some of the board's more esteemed members, but yes it makes sense. For Saltmarsh specifically, I'd go with 1st level PCs. So, if the range is 5-7 1e, I'd say take the lower number. One thing to add - while @Li Shenron's method is best way to...

D&D 5E Adapting Old Modules: Question About Level Ranges

I've converted quite a few modules. I DM'ed a party from 1st to 8th before it petered out with just old 1e modules. I noticed a few things about levels and which ones to pick: 1. I'd add +1 to any magic heavy 5e party to approximate the magic expected in 1e. So a 1st level 5e party is akin...

D&D 5E Ravenloft NPC reactions to the various PC races

Sort of how I would imagine it, the thickly accented old woman opens her door and says, "Go away! We don't want anyone from his castle *makes a warding sign with her fingers* asking what you were here for! Be gone!" *door slams*

D&D 5E What skills are used most in your game?

IME, the most used skills are the ones the PCs have proficiency in. Partly due to the PCs training in the "important" skills first (perception, stealth) and partly due to the nature of the challenges they find themselves need to roll for (no one has tried to wrangle a goat, but they've all...
