    D&D (2024) D&D Beyond Article on Crafting

"Crafting should be a minigame." Flashbacks to SAO Abridged, where a blacksmith has to play a rhythm game, a fighting game, and a round of Space Invaders simultaneously to craft a longsword

D&D (2024) Josh Herman (Head of Art) Interview with Silver and Blue Dragon Art

Fair enough. I don't live in/near a desert (on the contrary, pretty sure the land my hometown is built on used to be a swamp), so I suppose I'm not too familiar with their seasonal cycles. Main point I was trying to make is that "storms" bring imagery of heavy rainfall, flooding, and frankly...

D&D (2024) Josh Herman (Head of Art) Interview with Silver and Blue Dragon Art

I mean, yes, that's precisely my point. The blue dragon has traditionally been a desert dweller - back in 3.5e they had spell-like abilities that let them destroy water and create illusions - desertification and mirages. The imagery here is all storms - pouring rain and raging winds. It's a...

D&D (2024) Josh Herman (Head of Art) Interview with Silver and Blue Dragon Art

Of mixed opinions on the blue... I like the design - quite a lot, actually - but it doesn't say "desert dweller" to me like the 3e design did. It's an awesome design for a blue-scaled dragon, but it doesn't quite say "blue dragon" to me... Feels more like a kind of "storm" dragon. Something...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

Assuming I'm remembering how they lined up in the playtest correctly: Heavenly covered LG planes (Arcadia, Celestia, and Bytopia) Idyllic covered NG planes (Bytopia, Elysium, and the Beastlands) Exalted covered the CG planes (The Beastlands, Arborea, and Ysgard) So archons, being LG and native...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

I'm not especially disappointed with the aasimar we got, per se, but I would have liked a set of lineage options paralleling the new tiefling. One of the main reasons I liked the first draft of the ardling, at least in concept, is because it created a distinction between "celestial" and...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

For what it's worth, as of the 2e remaster, "half-elves" (renamed Aiuvarin) have been turned into a Versatile Heritage akin to how Pathfinder handles planetouched, so they can now be applied to any base ancestry, not just human. Likewise with "half-orcs", now called Dromaar.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

Fair enough - never been a Dragonlance fan, so I freely admit that my understanding of the setting is not the strongest.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

I couldn't care less about +2 to Charisma - I'm perfectly fine letting starting ASIs shift to character background or just be left floating, Tasha-style. I care about species traits. Things like Fey Ancestry, Skill Versatility, Trance and Elven Lineage (or the lack thereof, as appropriate). If...

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

A preview video on the new tieflings by Pointy Hat from a month or so back confirmed that the "everyone loves tieflings now" thing has been reverted.

D&D (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

Well, glad Crawford acknowledged "half-elves" and "half-orcs", at least. Since they're specifying that the '14 versions are still usable because nothing in the '24 PHB is "replacing" them, I wonder if that means the "Pick-a-Parent" system didn't make it in at all, or if it's just been allocated...

D&D 5E Feasibility of rewriting Vecna: Eve of Ruin into an Evil campaign? (Spoilers for Vecna: Eve of Ruin)

By all means, if running an adventure where the PCs are Vecna cultists interests you, then go for it. I guess all that I'm getting at is simply that every time I see a "turning X into an evil campaign" conversion, it always seems to involve either upending the base story structure or inverting...

D&D 5E Feasibility of rewriting Vecna: Eve of Ruin into an Evil campaign? (Spoilers for Vecna: Eve of Ruin)

Never really understood why "make X an evil campaign" necessarily needs to mean "now you're working for the campaign's big bad" or "it's the same story, but now the big bad is a righteous do-gooder you're out to take down". Just because the PCs are a group of bad guys doesn't mean you can't...

D&D (2024) Regarding the new PHB!

My future self came back to tell me all about the new PHB, but in doing so caused a butterfly effect that completely changed how the playtest went, so he's pretty much as clueless about how things are going to turn out as I am now. He's also got this cool sword that he never uses and keeps...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

My father's side of the family is firmly Scottish, and when he was doing some digging along the family tree, he supposedly found a link to the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh/Queen Hatshepsut. The reality of the math is that after a certain number of generations (don't have the number off the top of...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

So it's better because instead of just getting to be what they are, they instead get to choose which fraction of what they are overwrites the rest? A human uses the human mechanics because they are human. An elf uses the elf mechanics because they are an elf. A Khoravar has to choose which part...

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

Breaks out the combinatorics formulae Mathmatically, 6 choose 3 (that is, choose 3 values out of a set of 6 possible values, without accounting for the order they're chosen in) is 20 possible combinations. To enumerate:

    D&D (2024) D&D species article

You could have every elf in your campaign setting use human stats and still retain a distinct "elven" culture for them - no one is claiming otherwise - yet elves are still allowed to retain their own species mechanics, because people want elves to feel different than humans. Same with dwarves...

D&D 5E Quests from the Infinite Staircase: How Is It?

Haven't gone through it in full yet, but I'm very much enjoying what I've read so far.
