    MM excerpt: phane

Not really. If "DM Fiat" was defined so broadly, then virtually anything the DM does is fiat. DM Fiat usually refers to other things, not the creation and use of plot devices.

Monsters are more than their stats

More-or-less because supernatural crazyness is fun, and killing a succubus isn't what most people would call "murder", while assassinating a royal consort because "she's evil" generally is.

Monsters are more than their stats

Am I the only one who doesn't see why a succubus in human form couldn't just seduce a king the old-fashioned way?

    D&D 1E Do you think 4e is d20 1e?

To an extent, yes. To a much greater and more accurate extent, no, not at all.

From the GSL news post: What are Occupations?

I'd love to see something like that, actually, since it cleans up the skill list considerably.

    Wizards Fall Catalogue

Wouldn't the rules material for the class be available on the whatchahoozit thingy?

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

I don't think I could have resisted the temptation to say: "Motorcycles!"

    Prayer Question - Cause Fear

Nah, I prefer to characterize it as the God's power, with the character just having the attention of said God due to particularly virtuous or otherwise saintly behavior (the details of what constitutes a "saint" being up to the god, of course). Prayers are requests for miracles that are...

    Prayer Question - Cause Fear

Well, I just find it odd that a Cleric of X could shoot the Arch-Cleric of X in the face with divine fire. Presumably the God is granting the miracle everything the prayer goes up to him. If said god is happy with both clerics, why would he smite his own? I'll probably say that cleric/paladin...

    Prayer Question - Cause Fear

My question is whether or not it works on people in good standing with the god in question. Of course I guess that question extends to all miracles cast by a cleric or paladin.

    Skill Challenges: Bringing the Awesome

Hmm. Good point. Maybe subdivide the skill challenge? If I have three PCs, and they're fleeing guards, I say: "Skill challenge!" For the whole group, they're 6/3. Each individual PC is, however, at 2/1. Two successes to escape, one to get caught. I'd probably allow successes to transfer, since...

    Skill Challenges: Bringing the Awesome

Heck, if you're me as the DM, I'd just say "Okay you gather the pigs!" I really don't like asking for rolls unless there's some kind of Big Important Thing happening.

The Warlock, what a great assasin!!

The assassin's shtick could be poisons, as it is with Castles and Crusades.

    Skill Challenges: Bringing the Awesome

Eh, if you're no good at improvising and your players throw you a curveball, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom. Or go get a glass of water. Or say, "hey, gimme a minute to think."

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Hmm. I read it more as a compulsion to protect and defend the succubus, but not one powerful enough that compels the charmed person to actually attack his allies. I see him intercepting their attacks on the succubus and pleading with them to stop attacking his "true love." But really I'd be...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Sure, but the spirit of the power is clearly more. Besides, which is more enjoyable? "Oh I guess I move back two squares!" or "My lady! I will defend you! blah blah blah...." I mean, I guess I wouldn't punish a player for this kind of pedantic anti-funnery, but I'd give him a disappointed and...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

This kind of rules lawyer stuff kills games. Look, folks- if you're charmed in this manner, then you're clearly infatuated with the succubus. Ham that up! Defend its honor! Recite poetry in its name! Go nuts! Don't try to exploit every damn loophole just to get out of it. You've been mystically...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Also if she's any good at the whole "succubus" thing, she'll use conventional manipulation to worm her way into the good graces of a target so that they damn themselves willingly.

Playtest report: Hanging on a fence

Not necessarily- I've seen a Mulder and Skully style "extensive development of two characters and their relationship" sort of thing before. The trouble is that it kind of lacks variety, and gets a little tiresome. My preference is at least 3-4 characters for a good range of interactions...

How Does "The Rules Aren't Physics" Fix Anything?

Just for the record, 4e is the only edition of D&D I'll have ever owned (just preordered) I am neither familiar with nor a fan of 3rd. I mean I'm playing in a game right now, but the rest of the group basically walks me through character generation and combat. I didn't hate 3rd with the fiery...
