    Star Trek Picard SPOILERS thread

So what do we know so far? Data is dead, his appearance is a dream sequence Nobody ever says Data's daughter's name, Lal. the Daystrom Institute still exists Synthetics became more common place at some point Synthetics went bad and burned Mars Synthetics were banned, yet at least one works in...

    Star Trek Picard SPOILERS thread

We loved it. How come Picard never asked about the Daystrom Institute's new employee, Dahj? I mean yes, they talked about Picard meeting her, but when he's given resistance to the idea of a synthetic, it's like "you tell me, you hired her." would have made a great line. Which that line of...

    MLK jr Day

I thought about Quanell X. When I came to Houston in the late 90's he was always in the news everytime the cops arrested a black person for doing a crime (that they did) and objecting to how violent the arrest was. He was the ambulance chaser of civil rights. Making a big stink out of...

    Watches

I have an older model fitbit thingy so the wife can think I'm healthy. Otherwise, I quit wearing watches when cellphones came out. And even then, pocketwatches are the best.

    Sick, Twisted Villains?

The problem as I said, is it became over-done. When editors reject stories because it's yet another rape-fest, usually written by somebody who doesn't know enough and it's written to shock you, yet again... That's poor art. It's not now and then. And it starts normalizing rape as shock value...

    Sick, Twisted Villains?

I read an interview with Jim Butcher today, and a question about him doing horrible things to his characters. He noted that he got a lot of letters that he better not hurt the cat, Mister. He pointed out that loss of a pet is common for many, and that for the escapist fiction he writes, he...

What is your favorite thing about Star Wars?

Lightsabers. Since last summer, I'm learning light saber combat (and not with a Force FX wallhanger).

What are you reading this year 2020?

I finished Magic 2.0 book 5 by Scott Meyer and started Kevin Hearne's giants book set in a new world that doesn't include talking irish wolfhounds. First 8 pages were everything we tell writers not to do and I almost put it down. Bad Kevin. Then it picked up and got better.

    Sick, Twisted Villains?

I'd stay away from rape. it's become rejection bait as editors/agents are tired of it. For a % of readers/players it trivializes a trauma they've experienced.

    New internet rule

Destroyed. Everytime I see a title saying so&so Destroyed my political rival, I am dismayed to find they still live.

    New internet rule

see also "Addictive" Which always puzzles me when the ad promotes "Addictive New Game" Who the heck wants that? Nobody at a party says, "hey, wanna try this new Addictive Drug?"

My novel -- THE CAULDRON, Ch1, The Siege of Concordant

whatever helps keep you motivated. The common advice anytime your plot seems stuck is to add more conflict and problems. So you could spread the disease around like plot-herpes. :) try to announce your Diseases, Divorces and Deaths on page 1, it's usually poor form to spring that out in page...

My novel -- THE CAULDRON, Ch1, The Siege of Concordant

To go further with the example of what passive language means (aka Passive Voice) the word "was" is the action killer. It's a limp flacid way. "The hooded figure was striding through the crowd." How about "The hooded figure strode through the crowd" The man's on a mission. He ain't wassing...

My novel -- THE CAULDRON, Ch1, The Siege of Concordant

well like, I said the first time, the first chapter had tons of good plot setups. and chapter 10 kept me in the scene better as it was just one party. Hang in there man. Even if all you hear is problems to fix. Because we wouldn't tell you that stuff unless we believed your project has...

    Witcher (Netflix)

As I understand it from an interview with Cavill, they wanted 3 main characters, but the books don't introduce the two sorcereses until later. So they did the funky time stuff to bring their stories to inter-weave with Geralt. My wife has read most the books and played the stuffing out of the...

How would you change the new Star Wars trilogy

After much thought, I figured it out. Here's the small thing I would change. I would use AI to remove or mask any and all content talking about "what's wrong with Star Wars" so the rest of us can just watch the darn films. More than half of the problem is people pointing out a supposed...

What are you reading this year 2020?

ah, that explains it. I was confused, because it seemed different and far reaching. Either way, thank you for doing the legwork to keep the conversation about books and reading going.

What are you reading this year 2020?

reading Midnight Riot, first book in the Rivers of London series. Another fine book I wish I'd written. Around July, I expect to be reading Peace Talks by Jim Butcher. Sometime between now and then, I assume I'll read some other books.

My novel -- THE CAULDRON, Ch1, The Siege of Concordant

Glad it helped. A lot of it will seem obvious once you read it. But as a writer, we have to consciously think about that crap and do it that way. OR, change it to be that way. As some famous writer said, "the first draft is you telling yourself the story." The implies the next draft is a...
