    Readying Tide of Iron

Golmarr I think it's fine, frankly, but intelligent enemies who can see you should have a good idea that you're readied, and more or less for what. So it should serve as a useful mechanism for dealing with situations or preventing an enemy from doing certain actions, rather than necessarilly a...

    Power retraining question

Actually,. this isn't quite true, wherein lies the confusion (and Danny's attempt to get permission for an exploit). The rules explicitly let you retrain a feat for a feat you -now- qualify for, but didn't (and couldn't) when you originally got the slot. Tis is how you can get two Paragon...

    Power retraining question

As a general case, you can't retrain powers for something that you couldn't get with the slot if you got it now. So ixnay on the etrainingway owerspay that you got from a feat that granted you a level 1 power. Actually, the rules are even stricter -- you can't ever retrain a power for a higher...

Critical Hits with Power Strike and Corroboration

That Promise of the Storm answer is random. And wrong.

    Multiclass Healing

well, except that Student of Battle is daily. The only ways to get per encounter heals with multiclass feats that I know of is Mending Spirit (has to be second Shaman multiclass) and power swap feats.

Cloth armor are basically magic robes (when worn by a wizard, anyway).

    Hand Crossbow Build Advice?

A Drow rogue with Ruthless Hunter, Drow Fighting Style and Two Fisted Shooter isn't a bad approach, though it does require feats just to get out of the door. Use a rapier in melee (sharpshooter talent) and the crossbow at range (probably need to hide to reliably get sneak attack until status...

    Ranger aspects and initiative

Saagael: Yes, this. No-action powers that change you initiative right after you roll it will do what they say on the can, but otherwise bonus to initiative rolls only work if they're active when you make the roll.

Failures of a new DM, and how to correct it?

Smoke Jaguar I wouldn't go that far, but yes, splitting the party is an advanced technique. It's also a necessary one to learn, particularly with large groups, but there are a lot of mistakes you can make. Looking at my entire packed set of ideas: Tricking the party into fighting itself: Is a...

Question about Basic attacks on PC sheet

Basically, you want to put your best basic attack or basic attacks. Assuming you don't have powers, feats, or class abilities changing it, basic melee is Str, and basic ranges is Dex or Str (depending on whether you're using a Heavy Thrown weapon [Str] or a Ranged or Light Thrown one [Dex])...

Failures of a new DM, and how to correct it?

Another option for some variety is to split the party for some fights/setups. Put in traps that mix the party up and make them face two different encounters (or for evil, the same encounter, with half the party against an illlusion-modified other half of the party -- but that's a trick to play...

Is a Wizard the answer for party balance?

I'd be tempted to go with a Genasi blaster wizard (or mage). Strikery damage due to Elemental Empowerment, but access to wizard shutdown and at-will bursts.

    Re: Fighter A Go-Go

I did, actually. Pretty much all the fighter types would pull out bows to shoot with when combat were at long distances. Remember, 3e combats sometimes took place over far larger distances than 4e combats (mages would get a chance to use those 160 square, er, 800 foot, fireballs, ; I remember...

    Re: Fighter A Go-Go

I wouldn't sell the 3e fighter -that- short -- I mean, there were archer builds, grapple monsters, reach and trip monkies (and sometimes both), charging builds, exotic weapon builds, and a few other things besides. Also, the "every stat is crucial" approach combined with slower scaling monsters...

    I don't know anything

The most optimal races for Avengers are ones that can go Int/Wis or Wis/Dex -- Githzerai, Deva, Elves, Elves (yes, I mention them twice; elves are really good), Razorclaw, Bladelings (but they're boring), Shardminds, Shadir Kai, Kalishtar and Hamadriad. That said, there's an entire Avenger type...

D&D 4E One Houserule to Rule Them All; Or Fixing Epic 4E

An alternative (or additional) means of speeding things up would be to automate a hell of a lot more than you're already automating. Instead of just using a die roller app, you could pretty easily put the damage equasions for a character -- including adding in temporary damage buffs -- into an...

Level Drain, Lasting Wounds, and Other Long-Term Conditions

I think it's a fine houserule, personally. (Actually, it's not even a houserule. Just make some custom monsters that inflict a custom disease/curse on the players and you're good). Overall, I think 4e has gone in the right direction by reducing the amount of "I need a cleric or this will...

    Please critique this house-rule

Destil: I think that's mising the point, though -- the ability scores should still mean -something-. My suggestion shifted things more towards level -- putting the lion's share of increase into the level-based bonus, while reserving a smaller factor for the stat.
