    Space Adventure RPGs

I've played Coriolis and I love it. The "Arabian Nights in Space" angle depends on the gamemaster and how much effort they're willing to put into the flavor of their description and NPCs and cultures. Our GM wasn't great at that so his campaign felt much more 80s gritty industrial science...

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

I hope I'm not saying that at all. There are games that I think are badly designed, poorly written, with terrible layout, and may indeed be unplayable that I absolutely love love love! I hope what I am saying is that preference, appreciation, and enjoyment are not the same as quality of product.

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

I'm not suggesting that my criteria aren't subjective. They are, of course, subjective. I'm saying that there are different subjective criteria - that a game can be subjectively described as "good" or "bad" based on certain criteria that are not based on preference but are instead based on more...

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

When we first saw it at the game store we laughed, "Ha ha ha! What a stupid idea for an RPG!" When my roommate bought it we teased him, "You bought that? Ha ha ha! You are so stupid for buying that!" When we made fighters and had some fights, we were suddenly, "Hey, this is interesting and I...

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

Saying something like "dice pools are bad" or "a fantasy post apocalypse is bad" or "roll under systems are terrible" or "this is based on a comic I dislike" is a different thing from saying "this is poorly written", "the layout is a mess", or "this lacks any kind of cohesive design principle or...

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

My high school buddies and I had a lot of fun making characters for and playing TMNT in an After the Bomb campaign and Robotech Invid Invasion. A lot of the fun was discovering the skill synergies that gave bonuses to Physical Strength and other stats - so everyone took skills like Weightlifting...

    Weekend Nonsense: Favorite Bad RPG

I have so much love for bad RPGs. The World of Synnibarr is just glorious over the top nonsense. Space Patrol, one of the very first RPGs period, was somehow both too ambitious and too limited in scope. The Street Fighter RPG from White Wolf was not only playable, was not only enjoyable, but...
