    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 18June2024)

Thank you! I'm still having a blast writing it. Working on the next update. My players at that time were pretty much sold on "the 'loths are behind everything!" and then the Pandemonium plot arc came out of left field. There are more moments like that to come, some of which were punctuated by...

    Devil worship as a brand

I'm not sure that I'd call some of the earliest stuff "adult oriented". With all due respect to the game's origins, it's often 'juvenile faux-adult' mixed with 'titillate teenage boys'. It found a market and it worked it well, but let's not call it mature themed. The demons and devils at the...

How do you make demons really scary?

My players get the hell out of this thread now: Demons out of the book are often cliché, which is why if you give it a name and a history, you need to make it different and unique in some capacity for it to be effective. Make it transcend the stats and make the players exist...

How do you make demons really scary?

Pathfinder ceustodaemons (aka guardian daemons/guardian yugoloths) are threatening, but for a variety of reasons they aren't particularly frightening right out of the book. I wanted to use one in a demiplane my players were locked within. They find this thing locked within a warded cell...

How do you make demons really scary?

Speaking as someone who has published a lot of fiendish material and has been accused of running Call of Cthulhu within D&D, here's my advice: I think that you're approaching it from the wrong direction here to an extent. Mechanics and rules don't make anything scary. Some crunch can be used to...

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 18June2024)

*GRIN* This last update links back to some things in the very first post regarding what Helekanalaith thought to himself about the Ebon having just walked out of the Waste with no history to speak of, and what Lazarius and Sarkithel talk about to the General of Gehenna and himself respectively...

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 18June2024)

The Grand Hall was a heavy, ancient structure, with walls wrought of black basalt and supported by ornate flying buttresses. The foundation stones were of a slightly different shade of stone however, and if one dug their hands into the street and perhaps pried up some of the surrounding...

Planescape Planescape question about Janni genies

Off the top of my head, I don't think that there's a firm answer to this question in published material. That said, it's a really cool question. I'd look to see if either 'Secrets of the Lamp' or 'Inner Planes' from 2e address the topic, but I don't think they do w/respect to the question you...

The Dumbest Dungeons & Dragons Monsters Ever (And How To Use Them)

Bah! Don't ruin my day :P I despise that creature on a level only otherwise reserved for 4e "tieflings".

The Dumbest Dungeons & Dragons Monsters Ever (And How To Use Them)

I would like to thank every other RPG designer and author since 1e that the Stench Kow has been studiously and conspicuously ignored as if it had never been created in the first place. If I could reach back in time and burn the paper upon which it was first written I would, possibly using ninjas...

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 18June2024)

**** The hallway stretched out before them as they trekked into the Cathedral's depths, dark beyond the mere absence of light - their conjured light seemed to degrade with each step, with small grain-like motes of light breaking off and devoured by the surrounding gloom as they progressed. It...

D&D 5E D&D Next not planning to compete against Pathfinder, Splatbook Hints

I would play the hell out of a module based on that. Just saying.

    Dragonlance Dragonlance Lives

I would do a great many things to be able to freelance for the setting. It's quite near and dear to me, and very much informs how I approach fantasy RPGs, even as gone on to write much more for other settings like Golarion.

Pathfinder 1E Fitting the daemons from Book of Fiends into the Pathfinder/Golarion cosmology?

I'm aware. I think what's most important is the line of text there calling him out as a unique servitor of the Angel of Desolation; in my view of it, he's using the statblock of an OGL BoF daemon, but not the fluff that went along with the original. IMO.

Pathfinder 1E Fitting the daemons from Book of Fiends into the Pathfinder/Golarion cosmology?

I'm not super familiar with the BoF daemons since I don't own a copy myself, but I did read through it a few years back, but I do know a bit about Pathfinder daemons since I wrote the book on them (Book of the Damned 3: Horsemen of the Apocalypse). As for the question: It's a bit complex, since...

D&D 5E Do you think they will go back to driders being a curse instead of a blessing?

I've been quite open in the past about particular flavor changes that I didn't like: 3e FR going from the Great Wheel to a nominally distinct cosmology largely based on the FR gods' domains in the Great Wheel, with the change being retconned in. Orcs going from LE to CE without little...
