Mushroom Hunting Season is drawing nigh!

When I was an exchange student in France, I went out mushroom hunting with my host family. It was actually a lot of fun. We don't have too many edible varieties of mushrooms where I am, so there's no real payoff for going out to look. If I could be guaranteed a steady supply of puffballs...

So... what do you do with fairies?

Check out a book called "Meeting the Other Crowd" by Eddie Lenihan. It's full of contemporary fairy stories from Ireland and does a good job of showing their alien mindset. Some of the stories are downright scary.

Redskins: an improper name... now what?

If another person is offended by the sterotype you're portraying, it's racist (or sexist or classist or whateverist). Intent doesn't enter into it.

    How did you start?

Game books ala Lone Wolf and others. I don't exactly remember how I made the jump from those to D&D, but the progression was logical. I was probably in the range of 6-8 years old.

[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

What happens if you cap out the as given class advancement past, say, 9th or 10th level? Past that point, you use different rules to determine what kinds of perks the PCs receive. Non-linear saves, BAB and HP progression. Skills that stop advancing past having 10 ranks in them. Past level...

    Telling a story vs. railroading

*ahem* If the GM spends at least half the session narrating what the PCs are doing, the game might be a railroad. If the players actions have little to no impact on the plotline, the game might be a railroad. If the NPCs frequently outshine the PCs, the game might be a railroad. If the...

    Encounters for adolescent PCs

Have them play a game of make-believe and storytelling, letting the PCs make up strange locations. Then, when they venture outside the known edges of their small world, they actually discover the places they made up, including monsters and/or treasure. Within reason, of course.

    What's the medium?

I don't believe in time. Just a perpetual now which likes to arrange itself to make it seem to observers within it like time really exists. The thing I keep running circles around in my mind is defining exactly what an observer is. Keep coming back to thoughts about religion/spirituality and...

    Eberron-as corny as I think?

Maybe I'll have to reread the bits about the origin of the warforged in the ECS, but I got the impression that the forges were originally intended to create sentient constructs, and that the forges themselves were a leftover magical invention from a prior age of Eberron that House Cannith put to...

    Eberron-as corny as I think?

Eberron has grown on me. I was mostly indifferent about it until I picked up the Sharn book a while back and enjoyed what I read. Then I started paying attention to the different threads which popped up about the setting. My curiosity and interest had been piqued enough to the point where I...

Who Else Has Never Been To Gen Con?

Never been, though my dad and I are going to try to take a day trip down there this year and see how the artists area is arranged. He does up fantasy art (been out at the Mich Ren Fest for 16 or 17 years now) and I've *finally* convinced him to start going around to the various comic/gaming...

    Storn's art for swipin'!

Thanks! My dad's the true artist. I just do the colors. Your stuff isn't half-bad either! ;-) I'd've gone over and said hi, but well... "Hi! I don't know you but I lurk on a web forum that you frequent!" Just sounds, y'know, creepy. I heard what you guys were doing over there and I...

Are you mean to your computer?

My computer is 8+ years old. It has so many ideosyncracies that I wonder if it hasn't developed some kind of low level intelligence and/or self awareness. I like to think of it as a sort of the Millenium Falcon (lots of little trivial things don't work, but it always works when and where it...

Philosophical thread of the week: Could robots be conscious?

I'm keen on the idea of restricted/bounded free will myself. You're free to act within a certain range of behaviors, and the range of those behaviors changes in response to how you act. As for the original topic: It'll probably happen quite by accident and people won't realize it's occured...

    Balancing "RP" and "G"

I think people are rightfully concerned about the breaking of trust between DM and player when the DM decides to fudge rolls, as I hear that same underlying theme in just about all of the anti-fudging posts I've read (even when it delved into the category of describing what railroading is). If...

    "1-shot" Games

A one-shot I played in at a con and loved, was just a group of people role-playing through a mythological creation. Each person was a god who had certain types of powers (we each picked what we had control over during the inital character creation), and most of the game was focused in on...
