D&D 3E/3.5 Issues that might arise from a "core book only" 3.5 campaign and possible fixes?

No idea yet. We're still just finishing off our Out of the Abyss campaign. I'm more just getting a heads up on any 3.5 pitfalls I might have forgotten about. Possibly considering using Pathfinder or 13th Age PCs.

D&D 3E/3.5 Issues that might arise from a "core book only" 3.5 campaign and possible fixes?

Hi all, I used to be a huge 3.5e player, before moving on to other editions and other games. Soon I'm going to be running some 3.5e games again (Eberron: Shadows of the Last War, Whispers of the Vampires Blade and Grasp of the Emerald Claw, plus I plan on running Red Hand of Doom for some new...

D&D 5E Thoughts on Mearls' Comments on Fighter Subclasses Lacking Identity

I love the fact that a fighter is a blank slate as a class. It's traditionally the most open ended class, being someone who is good at fighting. If they'd attempted to create the subclasses as Shock Trooper, Fencer, Phalanx Soldier, etc they would have needed dozens of flavoured classes to cover...

D&D 5E Ravenloft in 5e: What would you like to see?

I've always liked Ravenloft as a setting, but I felt D&D's high-fantasy detracted from the horror elements of what should be a grim and gritty setting. This may sound weird, but I'd much rather play Ravenloft using a completely different set of rules. Vampire: Dark Ages springs to mind.

    D&D 5E Doing 5ed without classes.

Is there a particular reason you want to do this with 5e? There a number of great systems out there that are classless, so you wouldn't have to re-invent the wheel. Mutants and Masterminds whilst fundamentally a superhero game, can be used to run basically anything. It's a heavily modified d20...

D&D 5E Warlocks and high level play

Well, don't forget that for the most part all casters only really get their high level slots 1/day. Though definitely not being able to change the spell is a drawback. The trick is to choose something that you'll usually want to use. Spells like Foresight, Forcecage, Dominate Monster, Mass...

D&D 5E Warlocks and high level play

They get a massive power bump at 11th level. They suddenly get 3 slots per short rest and a daily 6th. If you compare a warlock to another caster, they get (for the most part) just as many 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th level spells (excluding the 6th and 7th slot at 19-20), and it's only 5th level...

D&D 5E [Dark Sun] How Would YOU Handle Defiling in 5e?

I known it might sound a little dumb, but I'd go with "no rules" option. Defiling or preserving is a role-playing choice. Ask your PC if they wanDeet to be defiled or a preserver. There after that is how they cast. I'd be tempted to award inspiration for particularly dramatic uses of defiling by...

D&D 5E Magic Mouth visual trigger & invisibility

I'd also consider allowing the use of a See Invis spell at the time of casting Magic Mouth to allow it to sense invisible creatures.

D&D 5E What class really is the "jack of all trades"?

There is also the Favoured Soul sorcerer. All sorcerer spells and metamagic plus a cleric domain's spells (Life for healing), plus proficiency in medium armour and shields and extra attack.

    D&D 5E Can a Warlock use scrolls?

Even in 3/3.5 it mattered if the spell was on your spell list.

D&D 5E Paladin Smite Damage Cap

I always interpreted it to mean a cap of 6d8, 1d8 + maximum of 5d8 on top for the level of the spell slot. It seems to me that the whole idea behind limiting to 5d8 is because paladins get up to 5th level spells. It just seems to work naturally with their spell slots this way, and thus the cap...

D&D 5E What aspects of play do you most enjoy?

I get a kick out of the social interaction, but maybe differently than you'd expect. The fun for me comes with interacting with the other players in character, whether it be exploration, social or even combat. I play with a great group and every "pillar" (though much less in combat) is usually...

D&D 5E What to do with players that always roll well

Another thing to check is that it's not a spindown die. Spindown die are designed for games like Magic: The Gathering to keep track of health. As such they are designed to have all the adjacent numbers on the faces of the die be in numerical sequence, so one side of the die is heavily weighted...

D&D 5E Death Knights and Smiting

Are you talking about the Oath-Breaker Paladin? If so, the answer is yes, they are paladin sub-class and so get all the features common to paladins in addition to the features granted by their sub-class.

    D&D 5E So...Multiattack

But a PC polymorphed into a T-Rex has the same intelligence as a T-Rex.

    D&D 5E So...Multiattack

I think it makes more sense (and is a balancing factor) for creatures like the T-Rex which get to attack with one bite and one tail, especially if you consider the use for PCs using polymorph. If you compare the T-Rex (CR8) to the Giant Ape (CR7) the T-Tex's bite does significantly more damage...

D&D 5E Detect magic and Gargolye

If they gargoyles, were summoned or conjured, illusory, magically disguised, animated, poymorphed or under the effects of another type of of ongoing spell, I would say yes, they are detected. But a generic gargoyle, just hangin' out and looking like a statue. No I wouldn't call that magic. I'd...

D&D 5E Non-Scaling Class Specialties: Why Choose Them?

I'm playing a 12 level Warlock that just multi-classed into fighter. For most of my career I wore Plate Armour (through feats) so I had an 18 AC. I chose the defensive fighting style and even at my level the benefit is significant.

D&D 5E mystic arcanum using lowlevel spell as arcanumspells?

Personally, I think it's possible to choose Magic Missile as your 7th level spell. There are precedents where "spell level" refers to the slot used to cast the spell, so I see no reason to prevent a player making this choice.
