    D&D 5E MPMB's D&D 5e Character Tools

Strange; visiting those URLs yesterday I was getting 404s; today they're working fine. Having the access to the source is awesome; thanks!

    D&D 5E MPMB's D&D 5e Character Tools

@morepurplemorebetter - I'm taking a whack at the UA Artificer, and noticed that the complete weapon & ammo list, and homebrew ammo syntax is missing on DropBox. Here's my progress, btw: https://gist.github.com/Ry7n/56454f2d9df4c2992bf29df9676b64d9 I'm doing up to level 4 for a game tomorrow...

D&D AL admin Greg Marks talks with Misdirected Mark about recent changes.

They weren't in 4E LFR originally; it seems like it's a natural part of the development process. The authors (well, WotC) overoptimize for simplicity, and end up with milquetoast monsters at high levels. With better system mastery comes revisions to the design rules.

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

No, it hasn't invalidated the feature because there are still benefits to high strength beyond attack bonus. I think damage bonus is a pretty big one.

    D&D 5E Paladin Predictions

I would expect Undead Hunter (that seems to be a theme of these new subclasses) and Inquisitor (aka Witch Hunter). Those are both pretty safe bets for past-edition kits. I wouldn't mind something more out there though; I could see a ranged archetype or a more political-focused type.

    D&D 5E Social Combat Rules for 5E

Sure, but the more likely statement would be, "…or I'll have knuckles over there tear your arms off."

    D&D 5E Social Combat Rules for 5E

Having intimidation based on Strength doesn't make any sense. In a court scenario, the best way to intimidate someone is to threaten to expose their secrets, not threaten to tear their arms off.

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

Power is all relative. For example, your DPR could increase by the square root of your level, linearly with level or double every level. Each of those decisions has some different gameplay impact. If you've ever played Space Alert with its expansion, the leveling curve is almost completely...

Play Your Way to 20: More Changes Announced for AL

The smell test is that if the adventure encourages you to stop and search for traps every step, something's not right

D&D 5E Your Biggest Gaming Pet Peeve

Yeah, I was aiming for a more concise parallel structure; in actual play I'd probably inform the character the door was stuck and ask if they'd like to force it first.

D&D 5E Your Biggest Gaming Pet Peeve

Player: "I want to open the door." DM: "It's stuck. Roll athletics." Player: "I rolled a 2, but I'm super strong so the result is 9." DM: "You give it a mighty shove, but it's stuck tight. A couple heavy shoves later the door opens but your shoulder's sporting a nasty bruise. Take 1d6...

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

I have to admit I prefer games with more logarithmic leveling curves than 5E, so it's no surprise folks that want a bigger power curve disagree. But my primary concern is how to keep the game reasonably predictable power-balance-wide and to stop build choices that break the game's math from...

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

Hard caps provide diminishing returns in a different way. A 16 STR you cap attack with +2 weapon at once your proficiency bonus reaches +4. Additional investment in STR increases your damage and attack bonus with less powerful weapons, and your athletics skill, but not your primary weapon.
  14. R

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

Capping ability scores alone doesn't solve the problem. A dex 18 ranger can still manage a +12 attack bonus without a magic weapon. My thinking is that by capping stats fairly low, players won't be incentivized to focus on a single ability. A 16 Str or Dex is enough to cap your attack bonus...

D&D 5E Your Biggest Gaming Pet Peeve

My pet peeve is easy. Failed skill checks that don't advance the plot. Player: "I want to open the door." DM: "It's stuck. Roll athletics." Player: "I rolled a 2, but I'm super strong so the result is 9." DM: "You fail." Other player: "Ok i'll try. I rolled a 16. My result is 16." DM: "Ok, you...

    D&D 5E Question on Alert

It's important not to treat alert as being psychic. Surprise has a very specific meaning: If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends. That's not to say things can't be surprising. Instead, treat...

D&D 5E IDEA: Actually bounded accuracy

Was kicking around an idea, curious what others think: actually bounded accuracy. The idea being that every PC stat that adds to or is opposed by a d20 roll has a maximum, beyond which the PC gains no further benefit. For example: Attack Rolls: +9 (+4 with SS/GWM) AC: 20 Initiative: +9 Spell...

Play Your Way to 20: More Changes Announced for AL

Oh man, don't I know it. That was, IMO, one of the worst parts of the game, although the treasure was great. And yeah, traps are really easy to do poorly, both in CRPGs and table top.

Play Your Way to 20: More Changes Announced for AL

Wow, this thread went off on an interesting tangent after I already had a question. How closely are those Durlag's AOs related to Balder's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast? I re-played through that this year. This is currently my biggest problem with 5E, and why I'm not really interested in...

Local & Regional Coordinators are no more

I have to admit that I think promoting Baldman's stuff in the same breath as excusing the staff of hyperengaged volunteers was a massive misstep. It's lead to all kinds of confusion already (players thinking BMG is taking over AL, is replacing AL, etc.). Mostly because makes the reader might...
