    ALIEN 2nd Edition Is Coming...

Not nefarious. Companies are amoral. But I do notice behaviors in business and, this is an incredibly niche industry which in their own way can lead to collusive behaviors that should draw the attention of the FTC, such as a sudden decision to move MSRP all at once across some of the best...

    ALIEN 2nd Edition Is Coming...

Sorta. There was a free version (and a low cost of entry POD), plus a bunch of paid for supplements / adventures. They put out a much delayed boxed version which is getting a lot of video reviews now. I got it, and it is excellent. They treat the previous version as their 0 edition. The...

    ALIEN 2nd Edition Is Coming...

Think what you want. They fulfilled the promised three pillars of play with support books. Hopefully they ran small enough print runs of those so they don't end up sitting on book stock through tax season. At least Star Trek: Adventures took seven years and, seemingly, took a lot of feedback to...

    ALIEN 2nd Edition Is Coming...

It isn't software. Ten years is enough time to produce additional content and expansions to sell to existing users and also, to acquire new customers, and also provide enough lead time for thoroughly testing a next version. A short time between versions means a few things to me. 1. The game...

Give a version 10 years, not five.

Yes, I've hit the limits of what is allowed here, so I am stepping away from this thread. Have a great rest of your week! :)

Sorry about that. I just noticed your response. I appreciate the fine line. It can be very hard to contextualize the life and views of someone without touching on these very things. I am going to step away from the thread for that reason.

There was a separate thread that included two sections of text from the book. I mentioned them in response. At least you are mentioning the 'master craftsman' of it. Right, and editing can be as political as anything else. While a writer is to some extent 'present' in their work, that...

Not all politics are life-and-death, winner-take-all politics. It meant that enough of the state's representatives were okay with it. Back then, states were seemingly more interested in state politics rather than being national sock puppets. Being a 'stronghold' wasn't what it is today...

When (or if) a state ratified ERA doesn't necessarily speak to the norms of the population of the state. New York and San Francisco were where the action was happening, and you had more businesses taking the goals of ERA seriously.

Average has multiple meanings in colloquial English, not just the one you decide fits your narrative. Yes, he lived in Wisconsin. Not San Francisco. Not New York.

Framing someone based on their race is passing judgement. Cultural appropriation is modern and controversial, and in application, passing judgement. A lot of world historical and (then) current beliefs were 'recast' in D&D, including angels, which appeared in The Dragon. That's also reflective...

Common is unremarkable, or possibly average. A lot of forward looking notions associated with the 70s were coming into their own in certain parts of the USA in the 70s. GG was 36 in 1974, so he wasn't a kid. I was surprised by reading Ben's book that GG was a Jehovah's Witness.

Certainly not popular opinion, but common opinion. I am somewhat skeptical about the reporting or for that matter, just how serious he was when he made different statements. Some people will say outrageous things to just get a rise out of others, or they think they are being funny...

First, thanks for posting that. Unless you scanned it, that's a lot of work. The vast majority of both texts, I didn't find particularly offensive. The framing of race (of the original creators and players) and cultural appropriation are forms of 'passing judgement.'

Being 'called out' for either doesn't mean their views were uncommon for their time, only that some people found what they said offensive.

That can be a shock, but also a lesson on shifting views over time. The actual name wasn't something he created but, a name sometimes given to black furred pets (dogs and cats). I read that story myself for the first time in the mid-70s but, I had already heard it being used in a movie from the...

A "visceral, inexplicable need to pass judgement" is one among several, but yes - as it is a rather common feature among recent history commentators, and in line with what (sorry, can't remember who posted it, but its back in this thread) the notion that all history writing is political speech...

You mean causing people to talk about something and, likely informing others, about a product that would otherwise not reach them or even be aware of otherwise? You are selectively seeing things in what I have mentioned that are not there.
