    D&D 5E Forgotton Realms Canon?

I really like their approach. They're leaving things really open, so that individuals can play in whatever version of the world they wish. If you're waiting for a big info-dump that fills in the official version, I think you'll be disappointed. Just go with whatever makes sense for you.

D&D 5E Does WotC suck at selling games?

Now that's a good idea. I would love to see anecdotal examples of play from experienced GMs in a starter product. I wouldn't dispute any of that. But they also have a lot more potential avenues of available entertainment, and potentially shorter attention spans. If they don't get D&D quickly...

D&D 5E Character sheet: Ability score or modifier in the big box?

The new way makes a lot more sense, and I'm all for it. You almost never use the actual stat number, but you use the bonus all the time. But guess what? They've deliberately designed the sheet so that you can do it either way, and thus everyone can be happy. Guess some are pretty hard to...

D&D 5E Does WotC suck at selling games?

Just read the rant. Haven't read much of this thread but just wanted to say that I couldn't agree more.

D&D 5E My D&D 5E Starter Set Quest and Campaign

Thanks for writing that up! It's always good to see how other DMs operate. It's interesting how differently each group's game can turn out. We've played six sessions and my players are currently at Thundertree. I reckon we may still have another half dozen sessions to go! Mind you, we tend to...

D&D 5E HoTDQ - Session 2: Went way better than expected

    Awesome! Loving your reports.

    D&D 5E 5e system in a card sleeve

Nice idea. You don't seem to have the proficiency bonus on the character sheets (and I think saves are also missing). Seeing as proficiency is fundamental to so many of the numbers, my suggestion would be to remove the skills section and just have a "proficiency" section where the player lists...

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

Just came to say I enjoyed your story, but disagree with your contention that it's a bad encounter. Likewise for the dragon fights - so far nearly every experience I've heard from people playing all those fights is extremely creative and dramatic play. But hey, my Phandelver players just TPK-ed...

    D&D 5E Preview: Thri-Kreen

Came here to see who would be really annoyed by this. (Would have been me, once.) How about inverting that bit of metagaming? PCs already had a rough day? The thri-kreen go for their weapons...

An idea to make the game feel lighter

I think this minimalist approach to character sheets would work particularly well with the variant where proficiency bonus is replaced by a die (+2=d4, +3=d6,etc.). It would also work well with the variant where your background stands in for your skills.

D&D 5E HoTDQ - Went way better than expected

Awesome session, OP. When things are going that well, the rules can go jump in the lake. I'm currently running Phandelver, and it doesn't much resemble what's on the page any more. But the module was a great starting point - it put a lot of the pieces in place.

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

I explicitly said as much earlier up the thread. But it's impossible to support the playstyle of every single unique individual with the default RAW. The way 5E makes up for that is being extremely easy to modify to your own purposes. The minimum requirement for that, however, is that you read...

D&D 5E DMG Spoiler: Death Domain

Thanks for this! I wanted to put a death cleric NPC into a module I'm writing. Now I don't have to make up my own version!

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

It may be that potential issues of party composition will be addressed in the DMG. That might be helpful for some people (particularly beginners). I think the point some of us are making is that for experienced DMs, this seems like the most trivial of problems. The rule is flagged - inside the...

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

How about we just agree that we might have fairly different priorities for our games? I'm pretty pleased that most of 5E is aligning to mine, but I can imagine that I would be frustrated if I felt it wasn't supporting my playstyle (which is exactly how I felt about 4E). One of the great things...

D&D 5E YAML (yet another monster list)

Thanks! I's already started adding a column to Ari's sheet, but this is much easier.

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

Basically what the Mouse said. One of the reasons so many people disliked 4E was that it seemed like a lot of things (classes, powers, monsters) were pretty much interchangeable, and that's not as interesting (to people like us). If you like the way 4E did it, by all means keep playing 4E. I'd...

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

Well I suppose if that's the way you do things you could be surprised by all kinds of problems with monster abilities. My guess is that the DMG solution to this problem will actually be "if it's not working for you, change it". Just cut the power (or replace it, if you can think of anything on...

D&D 5E Clay Golem HP Drain

I guess we do things differently. In my world reading a half-page statblock before using a monster doesn't really compare to memorising an encyclopaedia. When I bring a creature into the game, that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for as interesting hooks to feed into my storytelling. To...
