I feel genre plays a big part. Not that many people are into fantasy, let alone sword & sorcery. I've had better luck getting "normal" people to play (and enjoy) modern-day horror (esp. zombies) and Star Wars than D&D.

The D6 System is my go-to for most anything non-D&D. Originally the system of (now-defunct) West End Games' Star Wars RPG, it definitely gets my vote for Best RPG You've Never Played/Heard Of. The books are now free/OGL, and some have done good things with it, like APG's Mini Six.

Maybe I 've been reading too much of a certain author/watching too much of a certain HBO show, but I want my PC deaths to be: - Sudden - Traumatic - But most of all, unexpected :devil:

I'm cautiously optimistic, with a dash of cynicism and bias towards older (pre-3e) D&D. Still, I’m participating in the playtest to get my input out there. I feel it is my duty as a D&D fan, after all :)

However, 5e will at least get a +2 brand bonus for having the name "Dungeons & Dragons" ;)

My comments on the survey: 1. Use the 2e Monstrous Manual for format/inspiration. 2. Remove seldom used, non-iconic monsters, and replace them with iconic monsters from all editions (e.g. devil/demon lords, twig blights) 3. ???? 4. Profit!

You pretty much got the idea. The game, as it were, is to make the NPC party generation as random as possible, and use the results to generate ideas. A mental exercise, if you will. I deliberately kept the stats as short & sweet as possible. The bonus is, we get a nice thread of NPC parties...

Disagree, even though 2e is "my" edition. That said, the 2e DMG is not good when compared to 1e's, but it stands well enough on its own. Definitely a "C" grade.
