    D&D 5E Clerics and Wisdom

I actually completely agree. I mean, D&D's stats have basically been the same since the 70's, and they're enshrined in the OGL, so they're not realistically ever changing. But I don't think they're optimal, and this entire thread is a good example of why. I always kind of like WOD's breakdown...

    D&D 5E Clerics and Wisdom

Sure, call it what you will. My point was that when you talk about "Wis vs. Chr", you really need to specify the context of what edition(s) you're talking about, because they've had different connotations depending on when you're looking at them. What do they mean right now? I don't know. Ask...

    D&D 5E Clerics and Wisdom

I'm really surprised no one in this discussion has brought up the drift in the definitions of Wisdom and Charisma since OD&D days. I don't have my books in front of me, so I can't provide quotes, but I can provide impressions. Until 3e, Chr was supposed to represent social skill. IIRC, in the...

D&D 5E Too cheap to hire a lawyer, so I'll ask gamers...

I'm also an attorney with a background in copyright. Indemnity's post is accurate. (Also, as Indemnity said, my post is not intended as legal advice and while I'm *a* lawyer, I'm not *your* lawyer.) Merger applies any time there are only a handful of mechanical ways to implement an expressive...

D&D 5E I need your imagination - Rise of Tiamat spoilers

One of the big issues with Tiamat is that she's immune to low level magic, making casters severely limited in their ability to contribute. I'd suggest that while the wizard's boon is active (i.e., before raising the party, if necessary) it provides enough "oomph" to punch through Tiamat's spell...

Sage Advice 3/21/16 Exploding druids and antimagic field vs zombies and cure wounds

If I had a player who wanted to use the mechanics of a paladin class to play a member of an order of mage-knights or something similar, I'd be pretty okay with it. I mean, I get what you're saying -- the term "paladin" has a lot of baggage/tradition associated with it, and hand-waving that...

D&D 5E Recovering Ability Score Damage

I've only run across it in the context of the Intellect Devourer, which as mentioned above, does not list a way to recover from it. I defaulted to "recover one point per long rest" like in 3.x, and it definitely feels too slow. I found a way to work in a potion of Greater Restoration, but the...

    Sell me on the Warlock

I've found three basic builds for warlocks: 1. The "classic" Chr-based EB warlock: War X, focused on Chr (with Con secondary) 2. Dex-based bladelock: War X, focused on Dex and Chr 3. Str-based bladelock, Ftr 1/War X or Pal 2/War X, focused on Str and Chr The first and third are disallowed by...

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

Ha! So this is really all about what's meant by "dependent". :) I'd always taken it to mean "dependent" in the sense of "depends on, i.e., is based on the value of". It sounds like other people interpret that as "depends on, i.e., needs to have", which is a reasonable interpretation, but a much...

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

Okay, yeah, I think we're talking past each other. As I wrote above, MAD just means you're reliant on multiple different attributes. That was a big issue in 3e, since stats were uncapped, and increasing any one stat effectively came at the expense of another stat. The fact that you can't go...

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

Okay, that's fair. I think a lot of people are carrying a lot of earlier edition baggage with them about what "MAD" means. Especially on internet forums, a lot of people equated it with bad design, or maybe frustrating design, in 3E. At the end of the day, "MAD" just means "multiple attribute...

By all means, please, spell it out for me rather than just hinting.

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

You can absolutely play either of those options. However, the point that I'm making is that the paladin has more class features that function based on specific stats, and as such, the paladin is more MAD. It sounds like you agree that that's the case, based on the options you presented.

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

Having read the thread, I'm not really sure where you "show[ed] your work", but sure, I'm game. Fighters require Str or Dex to effectively function as a class. Paladins require Str or Dex, as well as Chr, to effectively function as a class. Therefore Paladins are more MAD than Fighters. QED...

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

I'm very confused by this statement. From what I've read in this thread, n00b f00 made the (utterly unexceptional) claim that some 5e classes are more MAD than others. I don't really see how anyone could argue that's UNtrue.

D&D 5E Magic Items for Monks!

I don't think this really fixes the problem. The monk still knows how many ki points she has, so can be careful not to kill anything to avoid going over her limit. Especially since any time you get a "killing blow" with a melee weapon, you can choose to simply knock the creature unconscious...

D&D 5E Magic Items for Monks!

This doesn't seem very dangerous to me. For starters, as written, it reads as a "may" ability, so a monk at her ki cap could simply choose not to gain the additional ki. Second, there's no randomness involved, and the monk is keeping track of her own ki, so she's going to know if she's about to...

D&D 5E Is the stat system biased against front-liners?

I know this is the conventional wisdom, but I'm not really sure it's true. In practice, a lot of the encounters we've had in 5e (and I say this both running and playing) involve enough bodies that there's frequently a kind of 'scrum' where everyone's mixed together. 5e doesn't implement the...

    D&D 5E Best Gish

There are kind of a lot of variables to consider: what level you're starting/ending at, and whether you're allowing multiclassing, feats, and variant rules (including Unearthed Arcana and splatbooks.) That makes it hard to give much of a definitive response. Without multiclassing, I'm probably...

D&D 5E D&D Magic: Does it Feel Magical to You?

I've been pondering just what it means for something to feel magical, and I think this is a lot of it. My first experience with D&D was in the early/mid 80's, and let me tell you, having Bargle cast a Magic Missile and kill my cleric friend definitely felt like there was magic going on. That was...
