D&D General how did we end up with the thousand types of Bruiser?

Because D&D is trying to be more like Star Wars, with dozens of exotic races to give the world more of a cosmopolitan and fantastical feel.

    D&D 5E Using a quarterstaff one handed?

This used to be how D&D worked. All weapons dealt 1d6 damage.

D&D General How Do You Create Great Magical Items?

Every magic item in my campaign was built for a purpose. When it is fulfilling that purpose, it does "more" than a generic magic item. Sometimes that purpose can cause trouble (i.e. always fight the biggest enemy, never retreat, etc.).

D&D 5E How much magic do you have in your game?

At 3rd you can animate the dead, bring the recently dead back to life, hurl elemental forces, fly, cancel other spells, bend time, turn into a cloud of vapor, summon creatures from beyond, and bestow and remove curses. D&D 5E Teleportation circles costs *how* much?!

Is it that rare for parties/characters to take a year of down time in most games? Seems like it would be almost mandatory in any kingdom-building campaign. Politics, realm management, army building...these things can take scads of time.

Indeed. Unless we have agreed upon definitions for Player and DM - which we don't - the whole thread is just mental mastication. But that's what internet forum threads are for! ;)

D&D General The DM is Not a Player; and Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock

Bad set theory Fish: An animal that breaths underwater and eats smaller fishes. Tuna. Breathes underwater and eats smaller fishes - therefore a fish. Shark. Breathes underwater and eats smaller fishes - therefore a fish. Really. A DM is a subset of "player", which is someone who portrays...

D&D General The DM is Not a Player; and Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock

Player: A person who pretends to be characters and rolls dice to resolve mechanics. DM is a person who pretends to be characters and rolls dice to resolve mechanics. Therefore: DM is is a player. Simple set theory. QED.

D&D General What is the appeal of Tolkien fantasy races?

The original question is akin to asking what the appeal of Jedi is in Star Wars games. There are things that are iconic to fantasy RPGs. Elves and Dwarves are among them.
