    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I'm not sure how many novice GMs are likely to be reading this thread, but if any are I submit that 'you can't trust your players not to take advantage' is not a great lesson to pass on to them.

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I don't know who you play with, but the people I play with wouldn't do this. I've done this kind of delegation as GM plenty of times and never had this kind of response.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I did something like this with a computer system at work. Worked great until there was an upgrade that locked me out and I had to call the helpdesk and answer the questions verbally in an open office.

    What's a 'narrative mechanic'?

Rant: The WORST way to encourage people to try other games than D&D

I don't think GW have ever hired the Pinkertons, used alleged abusers and conspiracy theorists as consultants, or attempted to back out of binding legal agreements

What does it take for an RPG to die?

4E will never die. Even after the last books have been purged and the last fans have been cowed into silence, it will continue to live rent-free in the heads of its detractors.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Rolemaster 2 100%. Accept no substitutes. RMSS adds a heap more complexity for little reason, and all subsequent editions appear to have been poisoned by the need to somehow merge the different threads together. RM2 is also the closest to MERP itself, you could very easily just take MERP and add...

How do you handle gems as a GM?

You guys mollycoddle your players with all this free information. I just say 'you find some colourful rocks'. 😏

What does it take for an RPG to die?

If I became a billionaire I would get the rights to RM2 and reprint it, and try to do the same with MERP.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

I still remember how I discovered RM. A school friend I'd played D&D with called me up out of the blue and told me all about this amazing game called Rolemaster and did I want to buy his copy (the three RM2 corebooks). In retrospect it was like a hard sell to get rid of a game he didn't like (or...

What does it take for an RPG to die?

I GMed some WFRP 1e two years ago and still plan to run a continuation in the near future. I GMed some MERP/RM2 a couple of years before that and still plan to return to it some day. I also ran AD&D second edition a few years before that.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Three false statements. Yes they added a lot of extra material to the setting but they kept this going without issue for 15 years. I don't believe it has anything to do with losing the licence, which was ultimately to do with the licence holders seeking to make more money off the pending...

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

This is all true, yes. In my game you apply a context modifier that gives you a bonus or penalty depending on how good a fit the ability is for the situation. The more specific abilities tend to get a bonus in the situations to which they apply (and a penalty to the situations where they do not)...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I do play a lot of D&D (the same campaign since 1990!) although not the 2024 version and I'm not very interested in the disourse around it. BUT Some of the discussions around Gygax/old school play and geek media are interesting. The moderation is pretty good and I think it helps create a...

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

No they aren't. All descriptors in my game work the same way. When a character attempts to do something and the results are uncertain we make a conflict roll. The player chooses which descriptor they wish to use, and which descriptors they wish to support it with. They get a bonus or penalty...

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

'Daily' is less clear and concise than 'once per long rest'? 'Maintain Spell' is less clear and concise than 'Concentration'?

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

Sure. I think that one purpose of game design is to create a language during play. As humans playing a game we're going to be saying the words of our game actions and character abilities repeatedly throughout the experience. So, lets use that to create and reinforce the desired atmosphere of...

What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

I don't think I have a single 'want' here. I want different systems for different things. I like Rolemaster and I also like Other Worlds (my own system, a single-roll narr-supporting system). In terms of fundamentals what I expect any good system to do is: Formalise/ritualise some part of the...
