D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

Other classes and characters might also have relationships to powerful entities that fulfil the same role. It's not something that only clerics get.

It isn't just due to their class choice though. EDIT: The same principles could apply to eg a thief and the thieves guild, a fighter and a local baron, etc. The point being that they have a relationship to a powerful entity but that relationship comes with costs, dangers, etc.

None of the games I'm familiar with work like this. The purpose of players adding setting elements isn't to provide mechanisms for 'defeating encounters' or the like. That kind of terminology or approach wouldn't even make any sense. The purpose is to enrich and develop the setting and therefore...

My understanding of FATAL is that it would be a different orifice being opened.

I think we have to assume a certain amount of good faith on the part of the player, right? Do you know what I call people who would try to introduce their buddy TacNuke the Invincible Dragon to the adventure? I call them people I would never play with. I've never experienced this problem IRL.

I understand. I also like games of that type, and in fact wrote and published one called Other Worlds that has 'players create the gameworld' as a central part of play. My posts, and I think the posts of others, have still been about what's possible or enjoyable within D&D. I don't just play...

I think we've all been talking about doing these things in D&D.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

It seems really odd that in a thread about rule zero we've now had two examples of player creativity - Odin and the bag of holding - shut down by GMs for being 'against the rules'.

    Ugh, yes, no-one wants that.

Who is writing really good stuff about geekery?

I've only listened to half a dozen or so, but the ones I liked were older episodes about Frank Miller, Secret Wars, Claremont X-men, and crossovers in general

In a game that goes full on into the 'players help create the setting' - such as Other Worlds, written by yours truly - then maybe. Although in my experience as long as about half of the group is fully on board, one or two more reluctant or shy players doesn't cause any issues. But I'm just...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

If you're playing in a game where the GM lets you create minor setting elements, and you don't want to create minor setting elements, can't you just choose not to create minor setting elements?

PC idea: this guy, but he's continually summoned to different realities as a go-to hypothetical, so he's been to every world and plane of existence and knows every language and culture EDIT: also, he has the Toughness feat, on account of all the punching

Well, TwoSix said that it had to make sense in the story. I would imagine an equivalent thing might be for potential allies in the thieves guild or wider underworld.

I think the whole Odin thing is a cool idea and a good example of how these perceived player overreaches can actually be turned into great avenues for exploration in play. BUT I do see how we are getting onto the further edges of what we were talking about, and how it could feel like a step too...

Who is writing really good stuff about geekery?

So I know this sounds crazy but if you're interested in comics from sort of early 80s to early 90s (broadly, the Copper Age) then Rob Liefeld - yes, that Rob Liefeld - has a really good podcast called Robservations. It's very interesting, a mixture of genuine fanboy enthusiasm for other...

I agree, although it does depend on the frequency of the 'no' answers.
