    World of Greyhawk map questions

Also, for the town icon, the black dot is an unwalled town, while the circle-in-a-circle is a walled town. For the city, the star-in-circle is the capital, while the circle is a walled city.

    D&D (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

We moved back to B/X-OSE back in 2018 and haven't looked back. We were burned out on D&D 5E. We felt it was too magic-heavy for PC classes, life on "Easy Mode" for PCs, and even with DMG options like Gritty Realism, Lingering Injuries, and Slow Rests, we couldn't get the Old School feelings we...

OSE's official alternate Thief skills to good?

Dwarves have 2 in 6 for room or corridor traps, like pit traps, scythe traps, etc. (everyone else [including the thief] is 1 in 6). The Thieves Find Traps ability is for treasure and door traps (small traps on items).

    Looking for D&D-like alternatives to D&D 5e

I'm not going through 8 pages of text, but has anyone suggested Castle's & Crusades? For those of you who (shocked!!!) don't know, it is has been around since 2008, and can be described as "AD&D 3rd Edition". It uses the d20 system of v3.5, but the simplicity and straightforwardness of AD&D...

    E. Gary Gygax Sr. May Have Had Another, More Recent Will?

50 cents a page is pretty much government standards. It includes the time to make the copies, and wear-and-tear on the printers. It factors in necessary redactions when needed. But was there really 600 pages of testimony?????

TSR Best Way to Replicate AD&D?

I didn't look through all 3 pages, but "Swords & Wizardry Complete" may be your jam. It is essentially OD&D+Supplements I, II, and III. It runs a lot like B/X (because it's OD&D), but you get the OD&D version of rangers, illusionists, druids, and paladins (along with clerics, fighters, magic...

How happy are you with your regular ruleset?

I voted 'Very Satisfied'. Both my 'adult' table and 'kids' table both play 1981 D&D ("B/X") with some light house ruling of OD&D-isms back in. I absolutely love it, and both tables love it.

D&D 1E Seriously contemplating an attempt at a retro AD&D

I started way back with the Holmes Basic Set, in 1978 (with chits instead of dice!!). We 'graduated' to AD&D in 1980, because that's what the (edited) Holmes set told us to do. Despite the fact that they are almost entirely different games (Holmes was originally written as an introduction to...

D&D General Help me avoid “Chosen Ones” trope

It is an omen. History tells that in the Year of the Gems these things would appear. or A strange, unexpected eclipse happens. Now, suddenly, these gems are appearing.

    What's your age group?

Turned 55 two months ago. Played D&D since 1978. My group (in person) consists of 5 guys ranging from 36-57 year olds. Two of us have been playing together for 17 years. Another two have been with us for 14 years. One guy joined last year.

D&D General Which Gods/Pantheons do you use in your D&D setting?

In my 'adult' B/X-OSE game, it is set in the 1e Forgotten Realms, inland from the Sword Coast (starting in Iriaebor). The primary powers are those listed in FR5 - Savage North. Those are the common deities of that region. In keeping with the L-N-C axis of B/X, there are the 'gods of...

    Castles&Crusades: Is this "The One"?

I was big into C&C between 2008 and 2014. I really do love the system (except the SIEGE mechanic). We dumped SIEGE for a straight DC check, adding relevant character levels and attribute bonuses (most saves were DC10 +spell level or monster HD). If I was not playing B/X-OSE, I'd be playing C&C.

D&D General D&D as a Game- On the Origin of Hit Points and Start of the Meat Debate

And that is the crux of the 'problem'. Are hit points meat, or luck? Answer: Yes. If hit points are luck or stamina, then a hit is not a hit, it is a near miss....unless it was a poisoned blade or a wight, in which case it was a hit. If hit points are luck or stamina, and armor class is the...

What Unofficial Star Trek RPGs are out there?

Sing to me, O Muse, of BECMI!

So here is my two coppers: I strongly prefer B/X, due to the books being better table references, theif skills are not a joke, and a soft level 14 cap seems more playable. That being said, using Mentzer Basic, a 1ST PRINTING Mentzer Expert (original BX thief skill levels), and only using Book...

D&D 1E Forgotten Realms in AD&D 1st Edition a better setting for adventures?

So this thread necro is very timely for me. My group plays B/X-OSE, and I am prepping a FR campaign using only the Grey Box and FR5 Savage Frontier. I am porting in the AD&D type classes from OSE Advanced Fantasy (Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Gnome, Half-elf, Illusionist, Paladin, and Ranger). As a...

D&D General Going back to Basic(s). A thought experiment.

So, early in 5e's life, we jumped back in to 'official' D&D from Castle's & Crusades. We played "Basic 5e" from the core download documents: Core 4 classes (Fighter [Champion], Cleric [Life], Wizard [Evoc], Rogue [Thief]) and Core 4 races (human, elf, dwarf, and halfling). No Feats. Yes on...
