How Do You Coordinate Your Gaming Sessions?

I selected "Facebook Group", but we actually use MeWe for our game scheduling, uploading character sheets, downloading handouts & maps, and synopsis. We create an new group page for each campaign, and invite each other into it. So we have a permanent record of every game, including synopsis of...

    D&D General D&D Loyalty?

    I'm loyal to TSR D&D (OD&D, AD&D 1e, B/X, BECMI)

D&D General What are the minimum standards for a published adventure campaign?

I don't do "adventure paths" or "1st to 15th level campaigns", so I'm not the target audience. But, I've read some, and here are my gripes: 1. It is written to be read, not written to be played. Meaning it is too wordy (stiffled novelist game writers); 2. Information is not where you need it...

How Crunchy is Too Crunchy, For You Personally

Nowadays, I draw the line at anything more complex than B/X. If you can't get your complete game across in 100 or so pages, I don't want to play. We tend towards rules-liter games: B/X (or OSE Advanced Fantasy), Wild West Cinema, Far Trek, etc. I think Castle's & Crusades is about as crunch as...

How Do You Like Your Super Hero TTRPG Games/Campaigns?

So, I've played Champions, Heroes Unlimited, and Marvel FASRIP in the 80s, and played ICONS in the 2000's. ICONS is now my go to supers system. For any game nowadays, I prefer low crunch that captures the feel of the genre. I prefer the Silver Age motif, but I've run a World War II campaign...

How long are your gaming sessions?

I've run D&D (and Castle's & Crusades) with up to 7 players, but I felt that was too many. 4-6 is my sweet spot, with 5-6 being perfect.

How long are your gaming sessions?

My 'adult' group plays in person every other Saturday, from 5:30 to 10:00pm, so 4.5 hours, but it is generally starting closer to 6pm after small talk (and food!), and can wrap up by 9:00pm if it is a natural break and the next section would take too long. So, we budget 4.5 hours, and sometimes...

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

I'm right there with you. I'm a 40 year Greyhawk lover, but I now own the Grey Box, FR5 & FR3 - which is enough to run an amazing Sword Coast 1e style campaign. I'm actually gearing up to run a 1e Forgotten Realms Sword Coast/Savage North campaign, using OSE-Advanced.

D&D 5E House rule for in combat healing and yoyo at 0 HP

We don't 5e anymore (we B/X-OSE), but when we did 5e, we did 1 level of exhaustion for dropping to 0 hp and yo yo ing back, AND we rolled on the DMG Lingering Injury Table if you were dropped to 0 hp.

    Grade The D6 System

For 1e, I limit players to +1 pip per skill per adventure. And each adventure is supposed to be 7-10 skill points earned over an average of 2 sessions. So, as really the most a character will start with is 6D in one skill (4D attribute and 2D skill), it will take 12 adventures (24 sessions) to...

The One Ring’s Tales from the Lone-lands Release Date Announced

Both TOR 1e and AiMe 1e had the Rivendell and Bree books, which covered Bree and the Old Forest east to the Misty Mountains, and from Angmar south to Tharbad.

Paizo Paizo Price Increases and Sustainability Efforts

Not game publisher related, but I'm friends with an editor of a national magazine. He says that printing costs have skyrocketed AND distributers are charging a diesel surcharge on delivery - as much as $5k a truckload.

    Grade The D6 System

So, I found that reaction rolls (Dodge, Parry, Stamina) reaaaallly slow down the game, especially when there are multiple actions per player per round. Having a MiniSix fixed defense (at the expense of -1D for a Dodge or Parry) is well worth it. For those who don't know, the static number is...

    Grade The D6 System

I've loved the Star Wars D6 system since 1987!! Currently, I'm running my kids and their friends through a 1e D6 Star Wars game, using the HyperspaceD6 rules for the Force, and MiniSix rules to replace reaction (Dodge, Stamina, Parry). It is very cinematic and fast to play.

    Grade the Fate/Fate Core System

I WANT to like FATE, but it ends up being too loosey-goosey. I'm not a fan of players having that much narrative control, which can devolve into driving the game off the rails. Also, there is a huge player buy in, in that they must create interesting characters and be willing to loose in order...

    Favorite superhero RPGs?

I've played Mayfair's DC Heroes (1983?), TSR's Marvel Superheroes, Palladium's Heroes Unlimited, Champions, and the 2000's ICONS (original, not Assembled). I am a HUGE proponent of the original ICONS rpg!!!!

D&D General What "Rating" Do You Prefer Your D&D

Every game or story I've wanted to tell, I've been able to fully tell in a PG-13 setting. Some of my gore level might be pushing "R" (think the original Conan the Barbarian, with the caldron of body parts), depending on the setting or story.

D&D (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

I'm a fan of the B/X - BECMI "normal man" monster (AC9, 1-4 hp, SV NM, ML6), where 1 hp is a child or elderly, 2hp is a woman, 3hp is a man, and 4hp is a big man (blacksmith).

D&D (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

I tend to go a similar route (we play B/X-OSE) Level 1 are standard men-at-arms, wizard's apprentices, acolytes, etc. Level 2-3 are veteran warriors, worthy mages, clerical priests, competent thieves. Level 4-8 are captain of the guard, the most powerful magic-user in a small city, the bishop of...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

WotC has already stated that I'm not their target market anymore, so I really don't care if they fail or not. That being said, I enjoyed the movie, and I stated it was a critical success. Stating the obvious, that it lost between $100 and $150 million, and observing that a movie that looses...
