    D&D 1E Common House Rules for AD&D?

Haven't played AD&D since Middle School in the 80s (except for a short campaign in the 2000's using OSRIC). That being said, in the 80s, we: 1. Ignored Weapon Speed 2. Ignored Weapon vs. Armor 3. Used B/X initiative, combat rounds, and surprise. (Basically B/X combat rules). We essentially...

D&D General "As DM I have Created a Homebrew D&D setting which I have Used for Two or More Separate Campaigns." (a poll)

Same here. I've usually used my house-tweeked version of Greyhawk CY576 for most D&D campaigns. I prefer to use other's settings and 'adjust' them to suit my taste. I'm currently running a game of "Wild West Cinema" for our group, whose setting is damn near ripped whole cloth from Boot Hill's...

D&D General DMs: Do you review notes right before playing?

Our group functions between sessions on MeWe. I write a synopsis after every game and post it for everyone to see. Currently, I am running Wild West Cinema for our group. Besides the synopsis, I create a 1 page "Old West Newspaper" before each session to hand out at the session. It has...

    D&D (2024) D&D 5.5e, will you get it?

    Nope. I'm not their target demographic anymore. Over 50 years old. I bought/played Holmes, 1e, B/X, 3.5, and 5e. I exclusively play B/X nowadays.

    Favorite "Homeric" RPG or Setting

I can't stress enough how good M&M is. Much better than it it should be!! It is an 'alternate history' rpg, asking what would a 1974 rpg look like if Greek Myth and Harryhousen movies were the inspiration, instead of Tolkien. If you can look past the 'side bar' comments that are fake 'looking...

D&D in the 80s, Fads, and the Satanic Panic

I grew up in the beach cities of L.A. County in the late 70s through 80s. My first game of D&D was OD&D (I think), run by one of my dad's friends, in around 1978. I was 9ish. He ran both a couple D&D games and a Traveller game for my family. My folks didn't get in to it, but me and my brother...

    "Sweep" attacks in classic D&D

I've been adding OD&D back in to my B/X lately. I decided that at 4th level, fighters get 4 attacks against 1HD creatures, and at 8th level they get 8 attacks. Each attack is rolled individually, but I am also toying with just rolling a d4 or d8 to see how many drop.

D&D General Alien Character Mindsets: Elves should be pretty conservative about almost everything.

On the topic of whether a 700 (5e) or 1200 (1e) lifespan culture would be conservative or progressive, I think it is important to note that humans, being short lived, tend to look on 'improving' on what our ancestors did or changing the culture from our ancestors. There might be a different...

D&D General How do you schedule your D&D sessions?

We have a standing schedule of every other Saturday, 5:30 to 10pm. That schedule only changes if 2 or more of us can't make it (there are 4 of us), or if it is a holiday weekend (Christmas eve, etc.). Out of 26 bi-weekly possibilities, we probably meet 23-24 times a year.
