OD&D "Guidon" D&D Draft in "The Making of Original D&D"

I've been poking through the 1973 draft in the book (starting on page 85), and the most fascinating thing to me is the amount of gymnastics that the TSR folks had to go through to get to the hit matrix that they ended up with in the 1974 version - page 19 of Men & Magic. It's always seemed odd...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I kind of what to do these adventury dungeon crawls, not this whole role playing thing so much. B/X suits that pretty darn well.

D&D (2024) WotC has called the new ruleset 5.2. Why don't we?

I don't mind this. I prefer 5.24 or 5e24 denoting the changes by year - which if you want to include Tasha's as it's own set of hefty changes is useful. I just think that calling it 5.5 or 5.75 is shortsighted.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

I'm mostly thinking about release schedule. Think of it as tick tock. Tick is a new version with a bunch of things fixed, and maybe some adjustments to the math. If they want to add a new class or subclass, or adjustments to classes and subclasses, they wait until tock to add a new fighter or...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

If you're coming from something following modern design championed by 3e, 5e, Pathfinder, etc., a lot of the challenge is unlearning the habits built there. If you have 24 characters with 6 players and you have each character and each monster go in order, you aren't doing it right. I have 2-3...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Every fight should be a puzzle, and every puzzle should have multiple solutions.

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

A 0-level funnel can be a fantastic thing. It sounds like you were in a poorly run one.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

Not disagreed. Really depends on what they do with the edition.

    D&D (2024) Let's call it 5.24

5.24 because when they release a new PHB in 2029, we can just call it 5.29 - even if it's a patch like Tasha's. Another great option is 5e24.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

I think they could have done a lot of that on top of 1e though. It just would have really added to the complication.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

They called 2e a new edition, but I think it was more of a revision until they started patching it with all the players options and complete handbooks.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

I would rather they just revise the PHB every 5 years than put out an optional patch. MM and DMG can have a lower cadence.

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

My guess is that the 5e math will last past this revision to maybe several more - assuming the power creep doesn't destroy it. 5 5.5 5.75 5.875 5.9375 Would be way easier to go 5 5.1 (Tasha's) (2020) 5.2 (2024) 5.3 (~2029) 5.4 (~2034) Edit: I like 5.24 Should let it run with this math until...

    D&D (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

Is 5.5 really going to stick? Many considered Tasha's to be 5.5 until this was announced. I think WotC is going to try and maintain compatibility for a long time. The power creep will be terrible. If we keep numbering like this, we'll end up at 5.9375 or something.

D&D General Where is the tv/movie drama about G. Gygax?

Been reading Slaying the Dragon (on Kindle) the new 1970-1977 book lately. I would be more interested in a series about the creation of D&D through his departure, with a lot of focus on him. I'm being very swayed by Ben Riggs's work. TSR sounded like absolute chaos. I feel like it should be...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

I don't think I'd say that you can't play 5e in an old-school way, but I feel like skill checks being front and center on the sheet (at minimum) nudges those involved to use them. Your experience may vary, but if a character sheet might say that some characters have the ability to do a thing...

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

I think I want to see this as two columns: Old-School Column Resistance to player directed builds A tendency towards emergent game-play A tendency towards emergent storytelling Fall back on the dice as resolution as a last resort (combat excepted) Characters describe what they're doing and the...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

I've spent so much time thinking about a new version of B/X that I've forked the Delta's OED repo and am reworking it to be a B/X hack in the way that I imagine a new Rules Cyclopedia to be, but to just be a hack. Mostly character class changes that can be used on top of an existing B/X or...

OSR This tells me OSR is alive and well.

I'm pretty sure they all suck at the start. The fighter is barely better at hitting things than a cleric, and that only happens at level 4, then the fighter is even with the cleric again until level 7! I strongly prefer low level stuff anyway, so there's no reason not to pick a dwarf over a...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

That describes many of my attempts to check out D&D stuff. When 5e came around, I thought, finally, there are only a few books, I can find a way to try this D&D thing that I somehow missed as a kid.
