Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

But in that moment of the combat how is the difference described? Describing something way after the fact is a little difficult unless you are writing down each how much damage each "hit" does seperately. I think most of us just subtract hit points from the total hit point pool, we don't have a...

Why do we really need HP to represent things other than physical injuries?

The problem I have is that if hit points represent physical damage how do you describe the single 50hp hit from the bite of an adult dragon against the 60hp fighter? If you describe it as just physical damage then there is no narrative difference between the 5hp hit from the claw of the dragon...

Confirming crits, good idea, bad idea, or worst idea ever

Max damage for a crit plus some sort of add on effect. This way you get beyond the "I could just roll max damage with a regular hit" and you don't have deal with the disappointment of a confirm roll that "misses".

Kits vs. Prestige Classes vs. Racial Variants

Personally I'd like to see base classes laid out for beginners: Fighter Cleric Wizard Rogue At the end of each class section you would get an example or two of how to create another type of fighter (say a knight or a barbarian) or another type of rogue (say a thief or a pirate) by selecting...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I see what you are saying but the fact is that D&D is not a game that is attempting to mimic real medieval warfare. It developed from it but it is no longer that game. Second wind makes sense as part of a heroic game because that is what it is.

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

First I'll agree that Hit Points represent a mix of an ability to take physical punishment, skill at avoiding a potentially deadly shot, luck etc. Second, you haven't explained it to me for the 100th time so don't act like you have. Third, I haven't seen where, in any edition the exact...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I knew we were at least a little on the same page here. Good ideas but I would probably implement something different. This I don't get because I have seen it clearly stated in earlier versions of the game that hit points were not considered just a measure of a characters ability to withstand...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I like the idea of a second wind as only being temporary hit points. You get them but if you still have some left over at the end of the encounter they go away. That makes more sense to me. I do understand why second wind as being any type of true healing is jarring.

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Err, since when is every combat in a fantasy world going to mimic a traditional attack from ancient japanese warrior? And even so you are telling me that no one ever was able to block the attack or get away from it? D&D is modeling heroic fantasy not real life. However, there is some basis for a...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Well, no. Someone asked if there were other ways to come up with alternative ways of healing. I wrote down something I came up with. You said "lame." I and others came up with ways that might describe how healing surges work. You said healing surges are a stupid mechanic. I have played the...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

That's the 3e definition. Other versions of the game have defined hit points differently and they include hit point damage as not always being physical damage. If it is always physical damage why are there no ill effects from that damage. A 10th level fighter suffering a critical hit from a...

    Izumi, Pretty much.

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

OK, I get it. You are set in your ways. If that works for your group that's great. I try and bring a different perspective and you don't see it that way. That's alright. I see hit points as the suggested guidelines are presented and you don't. That's the great thing, in the end we can go our own...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

My character knows he's exhausted but he also knows that he has some extra effort he can give. I don't decide what he does. He uses his own second wind but also know that this extra effort is about all he has left. Same style. One is role-playing and the other is also role-playing. Trying to...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

But that is what we do as players. We decide all sorts of things outside of the game for our characters. Like, "hmm, I'm under 10 hp, I'll drink the potion now." Sure the character thinks, "wow, I'm feeling injured I'll drink my healing potion now." Why wouldn't second wind work the same way...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Seriously? Ever see how hard a NFL player gets hit gets back up and then later in the game finds another gear? Easily plausible. Adrenaline counts. But we are not talking about actually getting hit with sword and then saying "ok buddy get up, where's your second wind now?" Hit points are...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

How is a second wind like that? There have been many times that I have played sports where in the middle of the game I have found that extra effort, that second wind. It's completely something that a character could know about. One thing a character could never know about is how many hit...

Hmm, more player control I would think be a good thing.

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

What if heroic surges were allowed every encounter? Is there no way for a player to come up with a creative way to describe hero/action/fate points? Maybe now that all of their hero/action/fate points are used up they feel more sluggish in combat and it may be a good time to retreat because...

    D&D 5E Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Wait but we have been told that Hit Points are already considered this as well. What this difference between falling back because you are low on hit points or low on any other resource?
