D&D 5E Concurrent initiative variant; Everybody declares/Everybody resolves [WAS Simultaneous Initiative]

But if the barbarian can do that, then the situation becomes a lot less interesting: the barbarian ends up in melee with the guard no matter what. I'm skeptical of allowing stuff like this. If the players can declare contingencies, that gives them an incentive to figure out the whole decision...

D&D 5E Any good spell creation guides? (Other than the DMG)

I suspect the only way to do it is to come up with something that seems fair compared to other spells of that level, and playtest to make sure it is. I'm pretty sure that's how the designers did it.

D&D 5E Gust of wind vs breath weapon

    I agree with this 100%.

D&D 5E Perception, combat, and legendary actions

Normally it takes an action. Having the option to do it as a Legendary Action means you don't have to give up your attack to do it. Mostly the Hide action. The Rogue takes the Hide action and rolls Stealth against the dragon's Passive Perception. If successful, the Rogue is hidden from the...

    D&D 5E Should Ranger/Paladin get 1 level 1 spellslot at 1st level?

No. They get spellcasting at level 2.

D&D 5E Concurrent initiative variant; Everybody declares/Everybody resolves [WAS Simultaneous Initiative]

A CASE STUDY Here's a simple hypothetical scenario: There's a Guard guarding a door, and a Barbarian wants to get in the door. The Guard sees the Barbarian approach around a corner. The Guard has higher INT than the Barbarian, but the Barbarian is much stronger. They both have the same speed...

D&D 5E Concurrent initiative variant; Everybody declares/Everybody resolves [WAS Simultaneous Initiative]

Hemlock This is a really neat system, and I'm looking forward to trying it. A few questions: You say everyone declares their actions in ascending INT order. What do you do if the players want to plan their next round? Back when I tried side initiative (all the players go, then all the monsters...

News Digest: Starfinder Release Details, Conan and Middle Earth Releases, PETA vs Warhammer, The Los

Don't forget: 4) Banning fur from being represented on plastic/metal figurines representing characters in a fictional universe that only nerds care about will somehow help this cause.

D&D 5E Blink and the single monster

EXTRA ATTACK Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Edit: Whoa, I rolled really low initiative.

D&D 5E Manual of The Planes vs Adventure of The Planes

D&D 5E Moonblade properties: do they stack?

No weapon in the DMG gives more than a +3 bonus (even the most powerful artifacts), and the first rune property makes it clear that the total bonus shouldn't go above +3. So I think it's pretty clear that "functions as" is just supposed to mean it gets the special abilities of the defender...

D&D 5E How powerfull is a permanent blur item?

Wow, this whole time I had no idea I had derailed this thread so hard. An @ tag here or there would've been appreciated.

D&D 5E Proposal: Fighter/mage/thief: quick and dirty concurrent multiclassing/gestalt rules

OK, so let me get this straight: A level 1 Fighter/Mage in your system would have literally all the features of a 1st-level Fighter (including hit points, proficiencies, and class features) and all the spellcasting abilities of a 1st-level Wizard? Compared to, say, a 1st-level Fighter, who will...

D&D 5E I want more Magic Items in my games...

#1: The game will get really complicated really fast, because everyone now has a bunch of extra things to remember and keep track of. #2: It might be a bit harder to judge monster threat level, since you can't rely on the DMG's encounter building math. #3: That's it.

D&D 5E What do I tell players about my overly complex political world?

Tell them as little as possible. No, not even that much. Figure out how little you can get away with telling them, then tell them half that much. Tell them less than what they need to know. Then let them ask questions (and give them the shortest answers you can). Let them explore this world.

D&D 5E Identify a spell as it is cast?

Here's how I do it as DM. Say for example the evil wizard is casting fireball: DM: "The evil wizard casts fireball. Dexterity saves, everyone." Player: "I counterspell!" DM: "Okay." Doing it any other way would require me to wait for the player to decide whether or not to cast counterspell...

D&D 5E Surprisingly Lethal Side Effect of Multiattack

In real life, there wouldn't be much reason to immediately finish off a fallen opponent. First of all, if they're still conscious, they'll be hacking at your ankles as you go in for the kill. Might as well leave them be if you've got someone else standing and trying to kill you. And if they're...

    D&D 5E Death from Exhaustion

Oh, I see. Yes, this is an interesting discussion. I'll address this in a bit, but first I'd like to respond to the rest of your post: No, "dying" is what happens when you are reduced to 0 hit points: If you're "dying," you're in trouble. If it gets bad enough (three failed saves), you die...

Trying to gauge interest in new battlemap-making software

2¢: I am a perennial DM with a penchant for game-enhancing fluff, and I'm not interested in customizing and printing out battlemaps. I've already found a cheap/fast/easy solution (wet erase markers) and an impressive/expensive/slow solution (Dwarven Forge), and I'm not looking for something...
