D&D 5E Philosophy of Greataxe vs. Greatsword

I let my players go to the Smithy and add damage to their weapons with adamantine edges and such. Evens things up and they love doing it. Say 350 gold to change the d12 to 2d6. They'll think it's expensive and they should.

D&D General Lolth Miniature Coming In February 2022

I see why some find her legs too large and/or chunky. I can imagine the design team wanting her to be larger than your average drider but then the legs had to be thick enough to make a successfully detailed mold as well as not appear too fragile at the larger size. There seems to be no stat...

D&D 5E Can you use misty step to arrest a fall?

What a novel way to put a PC on ice when the player piloting them has to take a hiatus. :)

D&D 5E Can you use misty step to arrest a fall?

That is certainly an option. Probably the best one, to be fair.

    D&D 5E What's really useful on a DM screen?

This, plus rules for surprise which I can never get to stick in my head when things kick off. Outside of some bullet points for key details related to the narrative so I don't end up contradicting the current state of something or something in motion, that'd be it. Don't like clutter!

D&D 5E Can you use misty step to arrest a fall?

I would probably subtract half the damage fallen prior to casting if a PC misty-stepped back up from the bottom right before hitting. Seems the correct "cancel out". If I wanted to make it trickier, I might ask for a DEX save prior to doing so since the timing would have to be perfect. Adding...

D&D 5E 5e Flanking - the good, the bad, and the broken?

I've been allowing both flanking and cinematic advantage and the players go straight for conga every time. I thought they would find it as boring and "game board-y" as I do, but they seem more invested in surviving so it's okay by them. I have been considering the +2 bonus alternative to...

D&D General Your quick post-it-note DM reminder

D&D General Who should play Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in a D&D biopic movie?

That would be a very marketable angle to frame the story. If I'm a studio head, I'm ordering that spec sharpish.

D&D General Who should play Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in a D&D biopic movie?

Can we get M. Emmet Walsh for one of them? Too bad Wilford Brimley and Scott Wilson have passed. For younger-ish versions, reunite McConaughey and Harrelson from "True Detective" and as a hoot have them play them the same way.

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight Review Round-Up – What the Critics Say

I really want to read this but see it as less of adventure for my groups and more as an incorporation to my current homebrew. But I love the idea of no combat and more RP, particularly in a softly psychedelic, multicolor wonderland that will provide a stark contrast to what they're in now. I...

D&D 5E On fairies and flying

I tend to create encounters for narrative and completely ignore the PCs abilities in extreme favor of their narrative interests. Not only have I had some of the greatest responses to sessions that ended up with zero combat, I'm long past thinking I can even predict how they'll act and it's one...

D&D 5E On fairies and flying

I think aarakocra should be banned altogether just because it's an annoying word to spell. But seriously, I really want flying PCs in my game. I love the dramatic aspect of having encounters on the Y axis. But it's a drag a lot of the time. Yeah, you can do this and that with setting and range...

D&D General Steal this from my campaign!

I had kind of a fun idea for a fantasy/sci-fi jump start that I might want to publish called Square One (SQ1). A group of low-level, forest-dwelling PCs are hunting and come upon an arrow made of strange material, described to the players as looking like a circuit board. Investigating the area...

    D&D 5E Lycanthrope Cursed PC

I love the idea of a player losing his PC to NPC status, but then having his new character and the rest of the party go looking for him. What a plot hook. I have a PC in one of my groups who is infected with chaos phage. Hmm...

D&D General Critical Role: Overrated, Underrated, or Goldilocks?

I wanted to add something before the thread fizzled. CR has a meta thing going for it that is very on brand for the ttrpg community: these guys are real friends that genuinely love each other. Sentimental perhaps, but I catch myself getting a bit seduced by their organic, tight-knit group almost...

D&D General Critical Role: Overrated, Underrated, or Goldilocks?

As a performer and player of D&D who is a huge fan of CR, what I see that makes the show notable beyond all things that make D&D notable is the energy put into each game by the players, and how that energy is generated by their being performers first, and there being an audience second. This is...

D&D 5E The semantics of the spell Sending

I think the sender can be familiar with the target without the target knowing they exist. I'm familiar with Margo Robbie but believe me, she doesn't know I'm on the planet. But if she did, she would recognize that it was me so that I don't have to make that clear and lose a few words of my 25...

D&D General Using the GM layer of a VTT

I ignored the GM layer for too long. It's ideal for placing foes out of sight and revealing them more or less spontaneously rather than dragging from the menu. It's also great for preventing clicking on the map and moving it when you didn't mean to then trying to slide it back to where it was...
