I agree to your main point. Professional climbers have a much better survival rate than 1 in 1000 (I am pretty sure we do not have statistics on medieval adventurers forced to scale sheer cliffs with primitive equipment) My main point was that your D1000 caveat might unintentionally undermine...

Just want to point out that D1000 isnt as silly as it might sound. Double 1 on a d20 is just above 2 in 1000. This is exactly the kind of situation where the typical group happily declare that the dice have clearly spoken a death sentence for that climbing character.

I agree. But in such a listing you should also in this context include some questions that would show a player actually prefering various forms of non-narrative way: "Do you love experiencing to the cool exposition and storylines your DM provides?" "Do you love feeling like you really discover...

And the standard answer is of course "because that is a different activity than the one we love?"

    Benevolent GM stance

I think if the conversation is working under the assumption that the term GMPC is bad, that what you describe can be aptly be called a friendly npc, then a more general clarification on where the line between these go might be reasonably within the scope of what I envisioned in this thread. From...

    Benevolent GM stance

Ah that might be the crux! The idea behind the choice of word "stance" is that this is something that is changing from moment to moment during play. I thought this would be clear from my initial examples. Play is not a continous tactical fight. And even within a fight I have described how I...

    Benevolent GM stance

Could we please try to not derail this conversation into one about GMPC. That topic was attempted excluded in my initial post. GMPC as @Ruin Explorer is describing is a phenomenom that is well known, and the center of many #rpghorrorstories. Ruin explorer is also recognising in their post that...

    Benevolent GM stance

I think this is a very good clarifying point! In the situations you are talking about the GM in question is not adapting an adversarial stance. But I cannot see that this is an argument that a benevolent GM can never take an adversarial stance. In particular you are setting up a very spesific...

One of my favorite rpg situations were when the players spent about 1 hour trying to figure out what was up with an obvious trap at the bottom of a staircase (holes in the ceiling, and a mechanism that turned the stairs into a slide). Finally they sort of gave up and decided to just enter the...

    Benevolent GM stance

Thank you so much for your reply! I am not sure if "stance" is a good word, but I think the concept I am grasping at here might be useful. I experience a very distinct mindset that I would label as adversarial when I am running a set piece battle in D&D to the best of my ability. Similarly I am...

    Benevolent GM stance

While sleeping on this I realise we do have the firefighter stance. That is most recognisable when I think we are on the edge of TPKs. I also think this is more commonly happening if I see that the game is about to stall because the group is stuck on some puzzle, or are obsessed with some dead...

    Benevolent GM stance

The adversarial GM stance when controlling opponents are well known. Similarly the neutral stance of the referee is well known. But to what extent can a GM have a benevolent stance? To clarify, I am not thinking about the general benevolent GM that really strives to make the game fun for the...

Ok! I fully agree with everything you say here! However I would like to reflect a bit more over the pedagogy in play here. Presenting fail forward as a way to heighten concouseness about the dangers of single point of failure feels a bit backwards. Similarly presenting an extreme view like the...

I have some new thoughts I think might be relevant for this thread. It was inspired by a friend rejecting my claim that FATE didn't seem to support premade adventures. Upon examining it a bit closer I think I see at least one approach it sort of would sort of work if I losened certain...

Exactly, that is what I think is the case for most that are not very into fail forward in this thread. Hence the label "royal" ;) I could imagine for instance there being some pit trap everyone fell into and the characters are out of all obvious resouces they normally would have had to get out...

I am a bit confused. Are you arguing that a procedure that someone claims are not good for them most of the time should be applied universally anyway as it might be good to use if you royally screw up at some point? Wouldn't it be a much better to just have it in the toolbox and when you find...

I think the way this is to be interpreted is very different in the two playstyles though. In the narativistic context something new should be introduced. The common result of failing in trad is however often the oposite - a posibility that was once there is now no longer pressent. Both are...

Wow, past post 10000! Anyone remember what the original post was about? It was spesifecifically not about political conservatism, and here we are debating how to run an effective (benevolent?) Monarcy - one of the most conservative government forms there is. Because I feel like that is what...

The reason for the stated rule without question or explenation is that I without that rule do not see anything in the rules protecting it from descending into a argument. That is counter to the fast paced light hearted feel of the game I am aiming for in this particular design. Just the act of...

I do not know if I might be misreading @Lanefan completely. However this is an indisputable fact: When I read Lanefan's posts that in my mind conjures up an image of a game concept I find really cool. When I read your attempts of explaining Lanefan I see an absolute horrible game concept. It...
