BECMI-style Racial Classes (Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, etc)

I think one of the reasons (probably the only reason) the other races aren't much different than humans is game balance. If you take the Lord of the Rings movies the elves are just plan awesome. If you want differences between races you are probably going to open up wide differences in...

    Armor as DR

I like this. Part of me wants to include the proficiency bonus into the equation somehow. I'm reluctant to include this in my D&D game as it makes it feel way less like D&D (that's not a bad thing). This is an interesting idea though and worth thinking about thought.

House rule for overnight healing: opinions wanted

There was another thread talking about using exhaustion levels to represent long term injury. That thread suggested a CON save to avoid the exhaustion level. I think this is what I'll end up using with the added exhaustion threat for spending a lot of HD. D&D is sort of a weird thing. It's...

    Bonus actions to control companions/conjurings

Personally I toss game balance for flavor and character. I am preparing a game and I actually combined the beastmaster and hunter subclasses. Also the ranger will be able to command his companion without using an action or bonus action or reaction or whatever. I'll think of it as having an...

    Single session experiment

I think this would be fun. Years ago my group held a game night of pure role playing. It wasn't even within the rules set of a specific game. It wasn't even a LARP. The game was set in a tavern and people would walk in and role play anything they could think of. People would react and role...

Critical Hit House Rule (and some thoughts on hit points and healing)

The magical crit charts are hilarious. We always have fun with funny descriptions of someone having a very bad day. Again Dark Heresy has something similar and it's fun to throw in a catastrophic death scene in the middle of a fight. :)

Critical Hit House Rule (and some thoughts on hit points and healing)

@Murkmoldiev - Wow you're pretty hardcore. :) That's a pretty cool critical effects chart. That must make for some suspenseful and hilarious dice rolling. In a way it reminds me of the critical charts in Dark Heresy only your's goes deeper with the possibility of continued rolls. While this...

Critical Hit House Rule (and some thoughts on hit points and healing)

Excellent. Yeah I haven't actually had a chance to run 5E yet. I am busily (actually procrastinatingly) creating my game world. So, I don't have any experience with how beat up characters actually get. I have been basing my analysis on running 3.5. I never played 4E. Anyway even the...

Critical Hit House Rule (and some thoughts on hit points and healing)

This is a fantastic idea. One (of many) thing that bothers me about D&D is the hit point system and how it is an all or nothing system. Your character goes from fully functional at 1 HP to helpless at 0 HP. Furthermore once dropped to 0 HP or lower they can be healed up to 1 measly hit point...
