What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

I agree. And the problem ultimately is that the war dogs stats are not a good model of reality, hence dogs are being used in unrealistic ways by the players that is bothering the DM. And rather than the DM facing (and fixing) the root cause of the problem, many people's suggestion is that he...

What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

No, to you, apparently, the history of gunpowder was "we better NOT use gunpowder or else some omnipotent being will single us out for punishment". Your suggestion is not an honest attempt to respectfully (of the players) develop technology in your game. This isn't about the "history" of...

What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

Really? Are you a DM? So the solution to a player doing something the DM doesn't like is to kill all of the PCs? What if a PC uses a sword in combat instead of a spoon, couch, or whatever the DMs favorite weapon is going to be? Is that a rules exploit? (because I'm such an expert min-maxer...

What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

If DnD said a dagger did 1d100 damage, then everyone would use daggers. IMO the solution is not to decide that there are only 50 daggers in the world and that they are only owned by the king. IMO, if you want your players to make the same decisions that persons IRL would make, then it helps to...

    OD&D = social mobility, 4e does not

Yea, I know. I hoped it was obvious I was just being silly. Too soon to joke about 4e edition wars I guess.

    OD&D = social mobility, 4e does not

(This is my motto as a DM.) I bet you the other 5 would have appreciated me realizing this before I killed them. The important point IMO demonstrated by this example is that the bad guy is always the one with the most treasure. This could be a quote right out of the 4e DMG. I wish this...

    OD&D = social mobility, 4e does not

Gandalf would so completely annihilate Isaac Newton it wouldn't even be close. ("None shall differentiate!") Newton could probably take on the Wizard of Oz but that's because the so-called "wizard" is a bad example of his character class. In general, my money is on the sorcerer (however...

What's tactics got to do, got to do with it.

A rules exploit (I see this frequently called "abuse") is a player using rules in a way the DM doesn't like and didn't anticipate. It's a judgement call on the part of the DM and IME can be solved by a house rule/clarification.

Stunting and the Bag of Flour Connundrum

IMO the issue is a clash of a story-driven cinematic style with a simulationist style. IMO the problem is solved by the DM first coming to terms with what kind of game he wants to run, and then communicating that to the players. If a DM is running a story game and makes decisions on the fly...

How the heck did medieval war work? And other rambling questions.

You and seemingly everyone who's written for WotC in the last 10 years. My guess is that you're probably in the majority. I think mohawks were pretty rare in the middle ages. Depends what you mean by "work the same". IMO the results achieved by the historical medieval period were a...

what do you do when a +3 bloodclaw weapon is more powerful than a +4 artifact

The first thing I would do is acknowledge that there's no one around to actually tell you not to use house rules. Especially something relatively simple like banning certain magic items. The second thing I'd do is question how suitable the challenges are that you're facing. +8 damage is...

Was 4e design based around the suite of proposed D&Di tools? EDIT: found quote.

The answer to the OPs question IMO could be answered in a more straightforward fashion by a designer simply stating their intent. Gizmo's opinion about what he has or has not been able to accomplish so far in the game (and with what tools) IMO seems less relevant. It's possible that the set...

Where Has All the History Gone?

What happens when I have six different PCs in my campaign world that all have pressing concerns forced on them by their backgrounds? I would imagine I'd wind up with 6 different PC parties.

    Hordes

I like (and have used) the swarm/mob approach to this. The "fireball survival" thing doesn't bother me - I just assume that the tightly packed mob is provided some shielding from explosions by it's density.

    Dammnation

You weren't making this case, but I don't see the difference. The question of what an NPC demon has to offer an NPC cultist is not clearly answered by the rules IMO although you argue strongly that it is. I just don't see it.

    Wahoo vs. Traditional

Right. I don't disagree, but the OP started to define what he meant by wahoo. I don't see how your definition answers the OP's original question. In fact, he used the cantina scene from Starwars. Now I don't exactly know what made him choose this example, but the cantina is not some remote...

    "pure" survivable, or "mixed" mandatory?

So you're suggesting that it would be fun to try telling another player that his fluffy feat choices are something that "nobody" is interested in? And that he's wrecking the game for everyone? Wooohoo. Sounds like blast. I think it would make for a great "example of play" in the PHB for a...

    Wahoo vs. Traditional

These are arguably two of the most extreme modules in this area. By far. "Barrier Peaks" was, importantly, set in a space ship that crashed from *somewhere else*. The technology was *explicity* not native to Greyhawk and these items appeared in no other modules. There are many more modules...

    "pure" survivable, or "mixed" mandatory?

Nobody IME is actually this rude in real life. Only on the internet. It would be bizarre IME for the adults that I game with to cop this sort of attitude about Dungeons and Dragons and not get laughed at.

    Dammnation

There are no rules in DnD for growing wheat or milking cows. Therefore, according to your logic, NPCs don't eat anything. IMO the rulebooks contain a rather minimalist set of player-oriented rules for adventuring. There's no reason to assume that a demon can't blip in and perform a ritual...
