    D&D 5E Feats, don't fail me now! - feat design in 5e

No, we're not. Nothing says that you actually have to use any abilities that you have on your character sheet. So what if your "terrible in combat" sage has a +7 attack bonus and +3 to damage with attacks made with his staff, if he never actually attacks with his staff to begin with? Maybe...

D&D 5E There are zero incarnations of swarm rules that I don't hate.

I have to say, I really, really like the swarm rules variations that pemerton 's mentioned before (where a hobgoblin pike formation could "kill" adjacent hobgoblins to heal) and ... uh ... someone else? mentioned (where a swarm, when defeated, leaves a couple low-powered versions of it behind as...

D&D 5E DNDNext Commentary on Arstechnica

... that we need to hold a completely unreasonable grudge against GreyICE for the next 5+ years, and bring up the comment he made every time he posts?

Legends & Lore 09/03 - RPG design philosophy

Right, but now you're applying the analogy to the wrong aspect, because we're really talking about game balance as it applies between the various players. In the analogy, the two teams are representative of each player's efforts and each character's ability to affect the RPG. In an unbalanced...

Legends & Lore 09/03 - RPG design philosophy

Except, at the beginning of the balanced game, you can't reliably predict the winner. You can reliably predict the winner of the unbalanced game. So, no I don't see how that's the same thing at all.

Legends & Lore 09/03 - RPG design philosophy

I agree with that, but Steely_Dan said he experienced the opposite. That's the "how" I was asking.

D&D 5E How much should 5e aim at balance?

So single-classed Figher = Aquaman? I'll buy that. Aquaman is "balanced" next to Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman because, somehow, there's always a contrived need to go underwater somewhere. And even then, it's pretty clear that it's presence in the story is a bone tossed to Aquaman to...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

Responding to an XP comment: Oh, no arguments there! Everyone has access to all the nonmechanical options that potentially exist, so I'm glad to see an evolution of the ruleset where everyone also gets mechanical options.

Gygax on Realism in Game Design

Yeah - no idea why this is a news article, myself. Of course, I hardly look at the news article listings, anyway, so ... ? Instead, I just read it as, "Hey - here's some things Gygax said." Interesting in its own right for that alone. I mean, I may not agree with what Gary thought all the...

    Need 'Vancian' Imply Slots?

As for 1:1 slots vs. points, that was just an example to make sure I had the idea right in my head, rather than a proposal for a balanced system. :) After all, if you're ditching the idea of discrete 1-9 spell levels, there's no reason why you couldn't also increase the range of available point...

    D&D 5E Rangers in 5e

    I am 1000% behind D&D finally making the one-handed-weapon-plus-nothing-in-the-off-hand a viable combat style. :D

    That's because it is.

    D&D 5E Rangers in 5e

Oh, certainly - it's just that, if you aren't going to have a shield, and you don't want a two-handed weapon (and those also have issues getting stuck in the trees, etc., so I could understand why you wouldn't go that way), then you might as well toss something small in your off-hand. It's...

    Need 'Vancian' Imply Slots?

If I'm understanding the OP right, you're proposing something more along the lines of a wizard working like a ring of spellstoring, where he can memorize "X levels worth of spells, no spell higher than level Y" and let him figure out what he memorizes? So, instead of 4 1st-level, 2 2nd-level...

    D&D 5E Rangers in 5e

Because if you're going to spend all your time tramping around through a trackless wilderness, the last thing you want to carry around is a portable wooden door. It's heavy, unwieldy, and gets stuck in the underbrush too much.

    D&D 5E How I ran combat in AD&D - doable in 5e?

It's funny, because the first group I played in (2E, Ars Magica, dabbled in SW) never used minis for anything - I'm guessing mostly because we didn't have any! My current group (3.XE, PF, Rolemaster, MERPS, etc.) always uses minis - for everything.

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

Such as ... ? And, BTW, I did give my Fighter some feats: Combat Expertise (thanks, 13 Int requirement!), Improved Trip, Power Attack, Cleave, Improved Disarm, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization. I now have 3 buttons to push, and it's taken me ... 6 levels to get there. Except, if I'm...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

How is this at all distinct from, say, 3E combat? Excepting the part where your 3.XE fighter has only one button (it says "Basic Attack"). Okay, sometimes, your fighter has two buttons - the other one says "Make a trip attack," but since you always press that button, anyway, once you put feats...
