    Caring for your books

Interesting, but not unexpected, responses. It's sort of like buying a brand new car. You absolutely dread the first scuff or dent, but once you get it, you just shrug any new ones off as part of the car's personality. ... and my car's got lots of personality. ;) When I open my friend's...

    Caring for your books

I'm the proud owner of all three 1st edition core reprints. I'm sure they'll get well used for the duration of my DnD "career". So far they are living in a satchel. And when they are removed, they are carefully handled. I'm wondering how you guys try to keep your books in good shape? Also...

    Maps/Lands from previous adventures

I'd imagine that generally, a dungeon, town or land would still remain, even after an adventure has been completed, unless it was somehow destroyed in some catastrophy. And even then, ruins could still remain, as they would in real life. In the world(s) of DnD, do you recycle your maps for...

    DM playing with PC?

We're very new, with a very limited group size. A total of 4 of us, including 2 adults, and 2 children. This means that only 2 of us really can DM. We're planning to alternate the responsibility. But we both want to also be able to continue the storyline from week to week with our characters...

    D&D 1E Inch/Foot notation in 1E Monster Manual

Ok, that explains a lot. I haven't yet received my PHB (it happens that's the last book of the 3 cores that I ordered. I went most expensive to least expensive so as to keep it from hurting so much when the wife found out.) I have my friend's original PHB, but haven't had much time to walk...

    D&D 1E Inch/Foot notation in 1E Monster Manual

LOL at "ninjaed"! Just to be clear, I was talking about scientific notation of distance, not DnD. So what we're saying here, is that the notation is intentionally different in DnD? Continuing to use the Banshee as an example, it's speed being 15", would then be read as 15 feet in a dungeon...

    D&D 1E Inch/Foot notation in 1E Monster Manual

Is it me, or is the notation for speed and distance backwards in the 1E MM? For instance, the Groaning Spirit/Banshee's move speed is notated at 15", which would normally read "15 inches". I'd bet that this is actually meant to be "15 feet", which should be notated as 15'. On the same...

    Optimal number of players?

Yes, I know this kind of thing happens all the time. So how do you handle the storyline when PCs are "absent"?

    DM playing with PC?

What is the difference? Would the NPC be limited to that storyline, whereas the DM's PC could move on to another story?

    DM playing with PC?

Would it be a faux pas for a DM to also play a PC in the same game? I suppose it could garner the DMs PC an advantage.

    Optimal number of players?

Wow, lots of feedback, and quite varied input! You guys have given me some things to think about, such as the possibility of boredom from too many players, and a game moving too slow. Obviously an opportunity to play is an opportunity to play, and as a DM, I doubt I'd deny anyone else the...

    Optimal number of players?

What would you consider the optimal number of players for a DnD session? My friend and I are working on building a group. I played a game last night that had 7 players and the DM. Game play was fun, but went pretty slow. In the course of about 2 1/2 hours I think I played about 5-6 times.

Intro: New player on the board, and to the game!

I went to a local tabletop gaming store yesterday, who have game night on Wednesdays. Was going to watch and learn, but they told me to join in. So, I got to play a nice Encounter game. In the interest of time, I played a pre-made character, human fighter with only a warhammer for a weapon...

Intro: New player on the board, and to the game!

Also, just a little show-off; in all my excitement to be able to play a game I haven't had time for in so many years, I made this dice bag. I was going for a specific look and feel, medieval. The fabric is felt, the thread is hemp, and the pull string is whipped. If I find a clasp that's more...

Intro: New player on the board, and to the game!

I could not find an intro forum, so I guess I'll post here. I'm new to DnD, for the most-part. I played a round once back in high school, 20 years ago. The DM was a bit of a problem, so I never returned. Now I found a new friend who also played many years ago, and we're interested in getting...
