D&D 5E Does Eberron need to be high fantasy?

I don't have my books with me, but Eberron do have other powerful NPCs... however, most of them are more likely villains: Lord of Blades, King Kaius III, probably the head of the Inspired, the Lords of Dust... Anyway, one of Eberron's premises was that characters matter, so they are supposed to...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I'm on the "magic" boat, as in, I do think Spells are a good part of the Ranger class and a perfect source of utility abilities (and damage improvement) that "makes sense". However I think "animal companion as magic" is a terrible idea... For me it just make no sense and isn't Ranger-y, plus...

D&D 5E Does Eberron need to be high fantasy?

Eberron is "wide magic", not "high magic"... It's a setting where NPCs wouldn't get past lvl 10, except for some very important villains (Lord of Blades)... Or one or another Commoner (like the best cook in the world, who had to have high levels to justify her high point count in cook skill...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Let's suppose for the sake of argument that it happens just as you said: change the spell list to be less magical, more utility/support and resources and turn Hunters Mark at a ability. Make the fluffy more like "special abilities" and spells are just resource management. Would that appeal the...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I don't have enough time to quote everyone, but I hope these well help me to make my point: "We", as players, D&D and Ranger fans can't agree with neither WHAT nor HOW Rangers class features should be built. There's no way to make everyone happy. And I dare to say it's quite hard to make...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I have a feeling that people who don't like Rangers with magic think the solution is a specific ranger archetype with magic for people who like it - it should make Greeks and Troyans happy. But it fail to see the point in Ranger spell-casting (and the point which people who don`t dislike it...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Well, except for the "no spells", you could go with beastmaster using sword and shield. Your archetypes are good, but I don't think the "basic" Ranger should be spell less - I agree with Zeuel:

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

I think Lord Twig has a point when he says that the Ranger in the PHB captues the right feel, but the problem is rules execution. And that is important: the point here isn't to make a spell-less ranger... or something totally different as they did with the spirits. Moreover, one of the stapple...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Hey MerricB, first and foremost congratulations and thanks on your articles about HotDQ - they're great!! I don't have RoT, but I've read quite a few reviews and articles... The way characters level up seems quite fast, every chapter plus every attack from the cult. In fact it doesn't seem...

D&D 5E Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

CMAD, Questions: *Have you done every encounter on Chapters 1-3? *Did your players complete most quests that give extra XP (like leading many NPCs to the keep, saving NPCs from the Church, finding the 3 dragon eggs)? *How many encounters / side quests have you done during the caravan travel...

[UPDATED] RAGE OF DEMONS! New D&D Storyline Features Drizzt, Underdark, & Demon Lords!

Also... i don't know Grayhawk, but Underdark spawning demons could be a nice Eberron campaign (like in Khyber spawning demons, plus that demon-wasteland somewhere northwest of Khorvaire)

D&D 5E Proficiencies don't make the class. Do they?

I'm not a big fan of 4e and it's take on classes because it "streamlined" them somehow; however I did play an Artificer back in the days of 3.5e - and also I'm a huge Eberron fan. That said, I think Artificer is akin to the Bard: he's a jack of all trades with sauce. Bard's sauce is music...

Where did my options go? - The New Paradigm

Well, since I can't use private message, I'll have to do it openly: JDillard, your text is very good. Indeed, it's one of the best analysis I've read so far about 4th Ed, very down to earth, without that babbling nonsense I'm used to see in other posts. Anyway, I sent this link to a Brazilain...
