Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (the exceptionally bad one, directed by Shatner and with the cheesy 'god' alien) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Get it right, man! :)

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Oh yeah....ST:V was dreadful. And shabby in its handling of the supposed 'god' figure. Many years ago I was at a Star Trek convention where Shatner was the keynote, and someone had the guts to ask him, during open QnA, if he regretted directing ST:V, given how bad it was. Shatner took it in...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

Good points - I'm not a B5 fan, so I didn't know that. I've watched bits and pieces of Space 1999 recently but not enough to say I have any clue about it, and I do remember the somewhat corny (but actually really cool) Egyptian imagery and references in the original BSG (because that's the only...

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

This is a great point. Rarely have I seen a cleric in DnD played as anything other than a character with powers wielded as the player wishes...what about duties to the god? What about spreading the word? What tenets of the faith are expected of believers and practitioners? Beyond that, I think...

RPG Crowdfunding News – HULL BREACH, Limitless Heroics, Limitless Monsters, and more

I'll take the bait. :) The idea of using the Bible as source material for a setting and campaign is fascinating, and setting a story within the events on which the New Testament are based makes sense (there are plenty of other eras in the OT that'd work, too). Recasting classes in ways that...

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

    Thank you! I appreciate it.

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

Yep...in fact, some of the random encounter cards address this, one in the form of an irradiated impact crater if I remember it correctly. There are rules for dealing with radiation exposure, too.

RPG Print News – Cubicle 7, Free League, Mongoose, and More

If you dig T2K, the Weapons Deck is a great, low-price add to your collection. I've thus far only played the game as a skirmish system (in large part to become familiar with the combat system) and having cards to hand out with weapon stats makes it easy to keep combat moving quickly when, for...

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

Spot-on perspective - yeah; me, too. A good system does more than resolve tasks when success is not assured: it models a certain vibe. This system does that, without getting nutty like Phoenix Command tried to.

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

For the good of the thread: the next episode on my gaming podcast (publishing tomorrow, 5 JAN) is about T2K - initial reaction and an initial commentary on the combat system. I have a guest cohost for this episode (my regular cohost wasn't available to record), and he weighed in with his combat...

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

Good point - a short intro adventure would have pushed it into the stratosphere for quality. However, given the maps and encounter cards you could easily assemble a series of encounters and just see how the players respond as they run away from their collapsing division.

Review of Twilight: 2000: You’re on Your Own, Good Luck

I am not a fan of YZE, either, and didn't back the KS because of that - I wanted to see how the modified version of the system was before spending money on it. I've played Forbidden Lands, Mutant Year Zero, and a good amount of Alien...and really don't like that mechanic, or what trappings...

RPG Print News – Free League, Chaosium, Modiphius, Osprey, and More

I'll take your word on the VTT stuff...I do all my gaming in person. Glad to know that it works easily and runs the same way virtually, though.

RPG Print News – Free League, Chaosium, Modiphius, Osprey, and More

You only risk jams like that from using ammo dice if you push your rolls. Unfortunately, magazine, box, drum, and belt-fed weapons do tend to jam more when you're firing at full auto, which use of ammo dice is supposed to represent. If you don't push your roll, then those ammo dice, even if they...

RPG Print News – Free League, Chaosium, Modiphius, Osprey, and More

Big plugs for T2K and Achtung! Cthulhu - they are both outstanding products in terms of system, organization, ideas, and physical production value. AC is, in my view, the best presentation of the 2d20 rules yet, with them described clearly in both the PG and GM's Guide. The GM's Guide provides...

RPG Print News – Free League, Chaosium, Modiphius, Osprey, and More

You could easily erase all that bad 90s music by simply saying that in this alternate timeline, 80s Metal and Rock prevailed. That's what I'm going to do.

    Cyberpunk Red: One Year Later

That's a really good point about the genre. Perhaps so much of its allure was because of not only what is was/is, but also of when it came out, and what was going on then (late 80s to mid-90s). The mood of the times + technological possibilities as dreamed of at that time + the cheekiness of...

    Cyberpunk Red: One Year Later

I am torn over Red. I played CP2020 a ton way back when, and loved the system, setting, and tone of the books. Only Vampire: the Masquerade matched the degree to which CP's authors presented their world through the tone and wording of their supplements and rulebooks. I remember the combat system...

Time For Some Star Trek Adventures In The Shackleton Expanse

It's a great book, and far more than just a setting sourcebook. My buddy and I addressed it in this episode of our podcast.
