    Rating Monsters vs Aliens

I gave MvA a "7" for the 3-D version. This was the first ever 3-D I've been to at a theater, so I enjoyed the tricks. I would have voted lower, maybe a "5" if it wasn't for the effects. Took the family to see the non-3D version of Coraline, and most of us thought it was "ok" but not great.

    Reading The Hobbit Aloud

I finished reading The Hobbit to my eight year old son about three weeks ago. We started it last year, and while it picked up quickly, we lost steam around the time the party got to Beorn's home. We re-started around winter break and made it through to the end, I found the second half went...

How Much Will You Carry to a Game?

As a DM: * Laptop PC (w/SRD, music and pdfs) * 3.5 Rules Compendium * 3 Ring Binder with notes * Box with minis, pens and dice I put all my working material in the binder and use the PC as quik-ref back-up. I earmark specific pages of the Compendium for specific rule situations that could...

This Weekend @ the Boxoffice: 2009.Feb.09

Major disappointment... As a reward for finishing a bunch of school projects this past weekend, I told my 11 year old daughter that we'd treat her to Coraline next weekend. She says she wants to go see the new Pink Panther movie instead. So much for that gothy image she's worked so hard to...

Feb '09: What are you reading?

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima. I bought all his translated novels back in college, and this was one I hadn't read. His main characters are always a bit messed up. Much different from the usual plot-driven stories I tend to gravitate towards. After I finish, I should...

    Glen Cook on Black Company

Better be careful about saying anything about Harlan. He has several law firms on retainer. :D Ahem - that last comment was a joke, a poorly executed one, but a joke nevertheless. I have the upmost respect and regard for Mr. Ellison.

How Much Do Spend Per Month To Entertain Yourself?

Too darn much - so says my wife! Probably about $150 for me, and double that amount to include everyone in the family.

    Glen Cook on Black Company

He certainly doesn't come across as an 'artiste.' Here's a great quote: Anything you wish to share with your fans? Thank you. Stop taking it so damned seriously. And get out there and buy backup copies of my stuff. I have kids in college.

    Wargames for casual newcomers?

C&C:A, Battlelore, and Memoir '44 use the same basic system, so depending on your tastes, these are a great place to start. You said you don't want to go down the slippery slope of expansions, and all three of these games have them. The basic box can be enough, but if you're like me and have...

Jan '09: What Are You Reading?

This was one of the final comic book series I started just before I dropped comics entirely. I read through book 3, and like Y-the Last Man, I found it very entertaining. It's too bad some series can't keep up the quality work, especially when it reaches a point the entire storyline is building...

Jan '09: What Are You Reading?

I love this holiday break as I can usually get several books read during the two weeks off from work. I finished The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians by Peter Heather, Shadows in the Desert: Ancient Persia at War by Kaveh Farrokh, and The Mysterious Benedict...

December '08: What Are You Reading?

Reading now: Shadow in the Desert: Ancient Persia at War (Osprey Press) - my bedtime reading Makers of Rome by Plutarch - my waiting room reading Marvel Masterworks 14: Captain America (TOS #59-81) - my "reading to my son at bedtime" reading I just picked up The Mysterious Benedict Society...

    Gaming and Your Significant Other

RPGing is my "poker night" my S-O is supportive of, but does not do. She has social things she enjoys (volunteering at a local theatre) so we take turns watching the kids while the other is out enjoying their activity. We've tried RPGing together a couple of times but she's expressed that she...

    Games you've bought recently?

Ordered Wasabi!, No Thanks! and a nice wood chess set to go under the Christmas tree for the family. Lots of electronic games are also purchased for the kids - DeBlob, Animal Crossing City Folk, Wall-E, Cooking Mana (Wii) and Nerf N-Strik (Wii).

    Starting a new game

Good thing about the game is you can often accomodate several different styles whether during a single session or over several. A good plan would be to make sure you have different opportunities during the session for different types of activities to take place. I also recommend running...

    DM Obligations and Player Dynamics

Solution Taken I didn't run our current campaign last night. Instead I ran a historical one-shot (historical horror) and everyone had a great time. A lot of the things that were missing in the prior weeks (joking, playing in character, engagement) was evident. I had one player who expressed...

    DM Obligations and Player Dynamics

Thanks everyone for the tips so far! About asking for funds - the up-front cost of this AP is $120. After throwing in supplemental materials, miniatures, and office supplies, we're over $200. Everyone in the group is a working professional and can afford to put money in. Given that I'm...

    DM Obligations and Player Dynamics

I think my following issue is something most DMs have faced from time to time, and I'd like to see how you dealt with it. I'm not enthusiastic with the game I'm currently running. I'm running Pathfinder's Crimson Throne AP, and while I like several aspects of it, I'm finding that having...

    Game Stores in Dallas/Fort Worth

Technically speaking HPB is a general used book store carrying anything people sell to them. If you happen to visit after someone cleaned out their gaming closet you can find some good books, but otherwise you're swimming through the dregs of old edition D&D, RIFTS, Vampire and GURPS books. I...
