D&D General Fantasy Racism in D&D

Honestly, isn't a lot of real-world racism primarily cultural and less about skin tone, even in the US? As in a lot of objections on minorities boil down to "they aren't like us (culturally)"? I'm beginning to wonder more and more if most racism really is some form of xenophobia actually.

D&D 5E If not the word "race", what word instead?

How does "Ancestry" even work though? Elves and dwarves, to use an example, don't strike me as having similar ancestors often in most fantasy works.

D&D 5E If not the word "race", what word instead?

I would rather use "Folk" instead of "Species." Species feels far too Scientific and "Ancestry" makes me instead of think of hybrids instead of distinct different non-related beings.

Also, if we're talking about slavery, Brazil kept it longer than the US by like 20 years I think.

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Oh I think I'm thinking of the Hobbit. There was a mention after the Battle of the Five Armies, IIRC, where the orcs or goblins or whatever got to take up some farming after their leaders were killed in the battle or something. Or maybe I'm thinking of one of the Redwall books.

Weren't the orcs able to go farming and such after Sauron was defeated in LOTR?

How useful could something like evil doppelgangers be used for possibly explaining prejudice or something against some races like say tieflings, for example?:

Wouldn't a grayish paint or ink or whatever be a better fit for drow skin tones anyways?

Apparently you quoted me? Was it an answer to a post or question of mine?

Regarding drow, those drow that worship that daughter of Lolth, they're still around right?

Whwt happens if orcs are worshipping alternate gods in their home settings and they run into Gruumsh orcs then? Might they have resistance against his corruption due to their worship of other deities protecting their minds or souls or whatever?

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Yes. What I'm wondering is this, past depictions probably were problematic (I wouldn't know since I was too young to get into the 1e or 2e versions of D&D) but in the current 5e era, does artwork or description really match that of PoCs, beyond having like gray or greenish skin? It's like those...

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Also honestly, wouldn't it be insulting to claim to 5e default orcs or whatever are somehow connected to PoC? Especially when said PoCs don't even have cultures or lifestyles that represent or seem similar the kind of barbarian lifestyle orcs are often presented as having? And looking back on...

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Not just orcs, but also other races as well. Imagine the possibilities of roleplaying them in places that are different from where they are. How weird it may be for them because they're so used to X in how they're normally treated but now they're treated like Y. For example here is some info on...

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

You know what this is making me imagine? Take orcs from Eberron or Scarred Lands or wherever, ones that are part of the playable races, and have them run into orcs like those from Greyhawk or wherever. Imagine the sheer weirdness on both sides as they possibly see some sort of perversion of...

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

So then what would elven adventurers generally be you'd say? Are they the impatient elves or something then, considering the various elf uh races, I guess you could say, all generally live pretty long?

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

This kind of makes me wonder, should an elf be the type who has to be dragged on adventures sometimes? Like they'd rather not accept a task or even really be serious about a situation (at first) because as you say it'll probably sort itself out (from their POV) and such?

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Does the modern default adventures still push orcs and such like they were in say 1e as walking experience points or something? I thought a lot of this stuff had been pushed by the wayside for some time? Except I've seen enough monster and creature manuals that depict human town guards to be...

D&D 5E WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

But does the basic text of dwarves, elves, or even orcs in 5e really represent what humans would think? Elves and dwarves, for example, have always struck me as being too good and content to be human. Things like having little or no crime (I see that in so many fantasy elf depictions) and being...
