    For All Mankind (Apple+)

Moore also did Star Trek DS9. Still one of the best star treks

    Severance

Agreed. The other shows worth watching on AppleTV+ are: Foundation - Adaption of Asimov’s books For all mankind - alternate reality sci-fi in which USSR lands on the moon first Shining Girls - adaption of Lauren Buekes novel about exposing a time-travelling mass murderer killing women in 1990s...

    Orville: New Horizons (Spoilers)

Spot on. I also think it manages to skewer the self-righteousness that Star Trek often falls for, especially in TNG. Think of S1:ep3 (About a girl). That ending is the antithesis of how a Star trek episode would end. Also, each of the members feel more human for their goofiness. I like too...

    Asmodee, Saudi Arabia, and game-washing?

I’m not forgetting that. I sought to draw a distinction between general proposition that unnamed corporations seeking a tax concession were equivalent to the conduct of the Government of Saudi Arabia funding rpgs in attempt to whitewash systemic and horrific conduct—for instance, institutional...

    Asmodee, Saudi Arabia, and game-washing?

I tend to disagree. I think there is a significant difference between a corporation involved in philanthropy as a tax concession and a country that is involved in systemic human rights violations, the murder of its citizens in a foreign country, and the spread of radical religious though that...

    Worldviews and campaigns coming together

The games themselves - originals and subsequent iterations or editions - all express a particular world view and are socio-cultural artefacts. Once that’s acknowledged, then we can cut ourselves some slack about whether we should include our own worldview in the versions of these games that we...

    Worldviews and campaigns coming together

Absolutely agree. You are enmeshed and influenced by your local culture - there is no way you can stand outside it to create an rpg setting. That all goes to how you create your settings - even when you try to create a deliberate alternatice If you don’t agree, just think about culture’s...

D&D General Do you use Alignment in your D&D games?

I use it to keep my players from murder hobo-ing and keep them on track for the characters they rolled up. I can’t say I’m always consistent, but it helps to alert your Cleric of Pelor to stop stealing and murdering everyone in sight. Also, let’s face it, alignment is more useful than a PC’s...

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is 39!

Wow! I have a handful of my FF books left and the Titan book (which I have thought about converting to D&D/PF2e). Warlock was a favourite, but so too was Creature of Havoc (#24), caverns of the snow witch (#9), Deathtrap Dungeon (#6) and its sequel Trial of Champions (#21) I read a few years...

D&D 5E How do they do smog in 5e?

The 3.5e D&D book “Cityscape” was devoted to urban environments and urban adventures. I know it is not 5e but it did have a section and pages devoted to then hazards, including magical smog. That might give you some clues or, finding the conversion rates, move it to 5e. You can probably find via...

    Main differences between pathfinder/starfinder and D&D 5E?

Complex is one word. Another is options. It is somewhat difficult to condense the difference between the two but there have been a few threads on this over the last 18 months. If you are interested, the better ones are: Rate pathfinder Actual play experience Trying out pathfinder for first...

D&D 5E D&D Should Have Less HP Bloat

yeah, it’s not perfect and the extra die role and remembering where you hit can be cumbersome, but it does avoid combat being a drudge

D&D 5E D&D Should Have Less HP Bloat

Another alternative is to use location damage for opponents and players. This involves taking the total HP and dividing it amongst different parts of the head, chest, abdomen, arms and legs. So 10% chance to hit the head of a creature with 100HP means the head has 10hp. The location damage is...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.X Retrospective 19 Years in Production.

I came back to the game when 3.0 launched and moved onto 3.5 when it was released. I’ve played with the same group for 17 of those 19 years, with one or two additions and losses here and there to the team I’ve played 5e with my kids, which is fine, but for the sheer openness in options, 3.x...

D&D General Taking the "Dungeons" out of D&D

I agree that encounters need to be re-jigged. Also, whereas dungeon environments place characters into a predefined and organised space that limit options, non-dungeon environment are a sandbox and can be very difficult to run. Some clear rules, with some simple tips and tricks, would not go...

D&D 5E Ideas for modules to lead into Red Hand of Doom 5E (excluding HotDQ & Sunless Citadel)

I’m currently running RHOD in the original widescreen format (ie, 3.5) and I used FoF as the immediate leadin game. I think FoF would work well in 5e, but I’d suggest some story changes for it to make sense. I had to do that for 3.5 too. In my game, I used the forge with the Duergar creating...

Level Up (A5E) Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition Is Coming!

I wish the venture well. My only worry with greater customisation or options in an A5E is the antithesis of 5e. It is about simplicity in rules, options and in its play. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like and want these things but I worry that A5E would break that philosophy. Still, worth a try.
