D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Orcus has been the main villain of this thread, so let's dissect this demon prince (in 5th Edition, since this is a 5e thread). The Lord of the Undead has a +10 to Dexterity saves, a +15 to Constitution saves, and a +13 to Wisdom saves. Already he's shrugging off most of the spells that a level...

D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

I reiterate that the post was made in jest, but I don't see why not. My original position was not that we should prohibit people from playing a certain way, but that sharing an idea is inevitably going to attract people that want to talk about what they like and dislike about it. Though, I think...

D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

I'm going to be completely honest with you, I just thought it would be kind of funny to make that post. But if you want a substantial answer, you presented an idea in a public forum. That people will show up to discuss and challenge it is a factor of "when," not "if."

    D&D (2024) One D&D is one D&D too much (-)

Boy oh boy, do I have news for you.

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

You are aware that I have been explicitly in favor of decoupling ability improvements from race this entire time, yes? We're going to have to disagree on this. Learning spells that I can cast once a day (or more often with spell slots), more than a few of which are either situational or keyed...

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

A dwarf scholar-wizard starts the game with 15 Intelligence and proficiency in the Arcana skill, granting them a +4 bonus to Arcana checks, a +4 bonus to spell attack rolls, and a spell save DC of 12. This is measurably better than the human baseline of +0 to Arcana checks and no spellcasting...

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

The change does make some options flatly superior to others, though. And I don't have a problem with the floating ASIs. I am an optimizer. I just don't envision anyone grabbing +2 to Intelligence and +1 to Charisma for their cleric for "the role-playing" when they have every reason pick Wisdom...

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

Everyone else seems to talk up the "fun role-playing" aspect of floating ASIs and playing fast and loose with racial traits. I can't be the only one that sees the latest trend expand the opportunities for optimization. As an example, when Tasha's was released, I could make a dwarf wizard that...

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

They are pretty emaciated, in my opinion, and do gloss over the many tangible implications of mixed lineage. Then again, I'm not really expecting much from a small pdf of playtest material.

D&D (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

It's a perfectly reasonable connection to make. "D&D One" is a name that could accidentally convey an idea of "This is the ONLY D&D! D&Deviants will not be tolerated!"

D&D (2024) Dungeons and Dragons future? Ray Winninger gives a nod to Mike Shea's proposed changes.

Hold on now. Cookbooks have pleasant pictures to entice me to try the recipe, flavorful descriptions of what the dish tastes like, maybe even some context to help me better appreciate the cultural significance of a dish. Look at a regional cookbook, they even come with history lessons pertaining...

I am obligated to post this again to remind everyone that Monopoly is supposed to make a statement about Gilded Age oligarchic plutonomy.

Spelljammer Spelljammer: Adventures in Space Review

Not to submerge this thread in a deluge of pessimism, but "trying to let the DMs come up with their own lore" sounds suspiciously like "offloading labor onto the customer." Why do they think I (a DM) would purchase a campaign setting? To look at the funny pictures? They correctly assume that I...

D&D 5E What (if anything) do you find "wrong" with 5E?

Merlin, Prospero, Soumaoro, Circe, Mimir, all predate Gandalf, and every character I just mentioned, in D&D terms, vaguely inhabits the "wizard" archetype. Despite this, no iteration of Dungeons & Dragons™ could successfully approximate them in play. They are inspirations that the game draws...
