Unearthed Arcana New Unearthed Arcana: Modifying Classes

So Wizards just posted an new Unearthed Arcana, and awesomely, there are two new character archetypes, one for the Ranger, and another for the Sorcerer. In addition, the new class creating guidelines seem very useful, and will likely avoide a lot of needless shoehorning of new classes and...

D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

Wait a second. You complain that this entirely new story is too derivative and unimaginative, but you want them to update the old modules and just print those? How does that make any sense?

D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

This is the same argument for new Nintendo games or new Star Wars games. But there are two simple reasons for this: 1. Most people that are playing the game now, have likely not played the old ones. New generations start to play, old players start to wax poetic of the old stuff. 2. Just because...

D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

See and this is the same complaint I have with Runelords that you seem to have with PotA: The whole adventure just seems disjointed and random. You go one place, totally new theme, you go to another place, totally new theme. It doesn't really expand naturally like Apocalypse does, in the sense...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

Kind of a catch 22 for the designers there though. On one hand, if you have a game where all of the weapons and items are balanced and useful all the way around, you'll sure make people who care about the game the most happy, but you'll make the simulation people unhappy. If you go the other...

D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

Might I ask why it doesn't seem very interesting? It seems to have a bit of everything in it, and having run Rise of the Runelords, I'm much more impressed with how tightly written PotA is.

D&D 5E Why is WOTC so awful at providing digital content?

All of those games cost tons of money to make. I'm guessing Hasbro is not allotting nearly enough money for WotC to make even something worth 2 million, let alone 10-100 million. It's hard to compare this to the video game sector because video games are vastly more popular than D&D has ever...

D&D 5E Convince me to keep reading Princes of the Apocalypse (*significant* spoilers. Also my players keep out)

D&D itself really isn't a good game to play for simulationists, regardless of the adventure.

Well it's more like a keep in that the wandering monsters and response to alerts are more connected than in a dungeon. And I think they might have missed something, I wouldn't make it reset if it succeeded in hitting someone.

Is this place fairly well developed? In the first part of their adventure, they go out of their way to describe how this isn't very settled, and that there's really only one large town for miles, Red Larch. It just happens to be a large town because it's the only one for miles, sort of like...

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

I really, really hate to say this, but there is a wrong way to role-play a character: when the game's rules interfere with the personality of the characters in the game. But I'm confused as to where you thought I was making an incentive of this. That was your example of what characters would...

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

This all comes down to one thing: DM fiat. It's silly to think that a DM trying to change the ability would allow this sort of thing. Its absurd to me that any players would think that this is ok. If I changed this ability in such a way and the players attempted this, I would expect them to...

D&D 5E Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Ah, I have a feeling that may help them a bit, but probably won't be able to bring them in line with the Fighter or anything, though I think we'll see it bring them closer and make them a bit more balanced in terms of in and out of combat abilities.

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

Do you roll initiative every time before you fight someone? (barring stealth, in which case you do on the second turn) If so, how does that not make it a separate state of gameplay? There is a clear defining beginning (initiative) and ending (no more hostile enemies taking turns). It's not...

D&D 5E Umber Hulk and surprise

What do you mean? They still have to sneak to avoid being noticed. Just use the standard Perception vs Stealth rules.

D&D 5E Melee Combat Benchmarking (Class Comparison) [UPDATED]

Did you count the Martial art ability for a monk to hit with an unarmed attack after making an attack as a bonus action?

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

You can just as much say that Initiative is in-game as CR is. CR is an abstract notion of the level of power that a creature has. Initiative is an abstract way of saying that one character reacts faster than another. In combat and out of combat is like saying in a meeting and out of a meeting in...

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

If they're hurt and want to recover, they can take a short or a long rest. If they're hurt and want to recover while they're being attacked, they use Second Wind. Like I said, it doesn't make much sense for Second Wind to be used out of combat based on its description. You can't be taking a nap...

    D&D 5E Second Wind Regeneration

You roll initiative, you're in combat. No more hostile enemies around, you're not in combat. Any discrepancy and you make a judgement call at the time.
